Apple AirTag Locates Lost Luggage That Airline Donated to Charity

Here's what happened to the missing baggage.

An Apple AirTag located a piece of lost luggage, but it turns out that Air Canada donated it to a charity.

The tracking feature of the AirTag found the whereabouts of a missing suitcase after a couple lost it during their flight to Ontario, Canada.

Apple AirTag Locates Lost Luggage

As per a report by 9to5 Mac, a couple in Canada says that an AirTag helped them find their missing baggage.

But unlike other lost luggage incidents, this ended up quite shocking.

Business Insider reports that a couple traveling back after their honeymoon lost one of their bags in Quebec. So they did what needed to be done. They reached out to Air Canada to file for a lost luggage report.

The airline says that the couple received a $2,300 compensation, which PC Mag notes is the legal maximum for lost baggage after missing their luggage.

But it turns out that the lost baggage had an AirTag in it. So they checked out its location.

Surprisingly, the couple narrates that the luggage traveled to what seems to be a "public storage facility" in Ontario.

9to5 Mac notes in its report that the couple decided to go to the storage facility where the AirTag is located.

However, they went on to ask for assistance at the Toronto Pearson Airport, but much to their surprise, they found out that Air Canada does not operate the location where their bag got to.

So they reached out to the police, and when the authorities opened the facility, it had piles of luggage. So they failed to find their missing baggage.

Air Canada Donated Lost Luggage to Charity?

Air Canada stated that the couple with the lost luggage "traveled late in the summer at a time when all air carriers in Canada were still recovering from the COVID-19 related, systemic disruption."

And as such, the Canadian airline says that one of the "consequences" of traveling during that time was an "elevated rate of baggage delays."

Air Canada further pointed out that "it was not possible" for them to identify the owner of the lost baggage. So they ended up tagging it as "unclaimed," and instead, they compensated their customer for their missing luggage.

9to5 Mac notes that the couple reunited with their luggage again after the incident went viral on TikTok. Air Canada provided them with an "individual case handler," which helped locate their missing bag.

With all that said, the couple might have never found their lost baggage again if not for the tracking feature of the Apple AirTag. After all, the airline had already filed it under "unclaimed" bags. Not only that, the luggage has been donated to a charity already.
