A Tesla steering wheel detached while a man was driving.
Prerak Patel, a New Jersey resident, shared his experience via his official Twitter account.
The EV owner said they were excited after getting their new Tesla Model Y last January 24.
However, on Jan. 30, he posted on Twitter about the incident where his car's steering wheel suddenly detached while he was on the road.

"Was driving on highway and all the sudden steering wheel fall off, was lucky enough there was no car behind and I was able to pull on devider," said the EV owner on his viral tweet, which now has over one million views.
According to the Daily Beast's latest report, an employee of the towing company that helped with the incident also said that he saw Prerak holding the Tesla steering wheel on his lap.
Because the problem was a manufacturing defect, Patel asked for assistance from Tesla.
At first, the automaker was supposed to charge him $103 for the fix. But, it was refunded after Prerak complained to the Tesla service center.
Patel was very disappointed with how the EV maker responded. As of writing, Prerak is asking Twitter users if he should keep the Tesla Model U or replace it with a new one or another EV model.
What to Do if Steering Wheel Detaches?
The incident that Patel experienced is not new for other drivers.
If you ever experience this factory defect after purchasing a new car, here are the things you need to do:
- The first thing you need to do is gear down or slowly hit the brakes to warn other vehicles near you.
- Once you feel that the car is getting slower, turn on your hazard lights. This will ensure that other drivers know that you have an emergency.
- Make a fall stop and leave your hazard lights on. After that, call for assistance from 911 and local authorities.
For the past months, many accidents involving Tesla EVs have been investigated because of such incidents.
Recently, NHTSA decided to lead an investigation to learn if Tesla crashes are caused by FSD.
We also reported that a driver blamed the Tesla FSD software for a major accident that injured nine people.
