PlayStation 6 rumors have begun emerging, on top of previous PS5 Pro and PS5 Slim reports.
Is Sony planning on skipping the new PS5 variant, such as "Slim" or "Pro," in favor of the PS6?
Sony PlayStation 6
A recent tweet from an industry insider, Tom Henderson, confirms that the Japanese gaming giant is planning on developing its next-generation gaming console, the PlayStation 6 (PS6).
The industry insider notes that Sony is looking to prioritize the PS6 instead of working on a new variant of the current PS5 console.
It is worth noting that previous reports pointed out that the giant gaming firm is planning to release a new PS5 Pro variant, which upgrades the hardware offerings of the current generation gaming console.
But this time, much to the surprise of many, Henderson claims Sony is working on the next-generation console instead of an upgraded version of the PS5.
The industry insider says he is "not entirely sure" if Sony is still planning on releasing a Pro version of the PS5. He says he is actually hearing more reports regarding the PS6 than the rumored PS5 Pro.
The PlayStation maker reportedly believes that the consumers are already ready for a new gaming console. So rather than working on a new version of the current generation, the Japanese firm is reportedly planning to go straight away with PS6.
ComicBook notes in its report that Henderson believes that the PS5 gaming console has already reached its full potential. Given that, it would no longer make sense for Sony to work on upgrading its specs. And the suspected next move is to proceed with the next-generation offering.
No PS5 Pro or Slim? A 'Gen 2' Instead?
The industry insider further noted rumors suggesting either a PS5 Pro or Slim variant might be inaccurate.
Henderson, on the other hand, believes that Sony is working on the second generation of the PS5 than new variants. He says that "I [do not] think [it is] a [Pro] or [Slim]. My understanding is that it's just "gen 2" of the regular PS5."
He predicted that the Japanese console maker plans to end the production of the first-generation PS5 before the year ends. Henderson further believes Sony would not make such a move if it is looking to release new variants of PS5.
His recent tweet disclosed that the second generation would start production as early as April. And it might hit the shelves sometime in September.
According to Henderson, the upcoming "Gen 2" PS5 potentially reduces overall production and shipping costs due to its detachable disc drive.
