On Wednesday morning, Jan. 25, Microsoft users worldwide were hit with an unexpected outage that affected several of the company's products, including Teams, Outlook, and various Microsoft 365 services.
The US tech giant announced that it was investigating the issue, which appeared to be caused by "networking configuration issues," The Guardian reports.
Microsoft Working to Solve the Issue
Thousands of users in countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and Brazil reported outages on Wednesday morning, according to Downdetector, a website that tracks problems with tech products and sites.
Not only were Microsoft 365 programs impacted, but so were the gaming service Xbox Live and the company's cloud computing business, Azure. In the United Kingdom, reports of the outage seemed to peak around 8 a.m. GMT.
Microsoft acknowledged the problem on Twitter, stating that they had "isolated the problem to networking configuration issues" and continued working to find the best solution to address the issue without causing further disruption.
The company confirmed in an update at 9:26 a.m. GMT that they had "rolled back a network change that we believe is causing impact."
A Major Inconvenience for Millions of Users
The widespread outage of Microsoft products brings inconvenience for the millions of users who rely on these services for work and communication worldwide.
Teams, in particular, have seen an increase in usage due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as many businesses have shifted to remote work. Many companies and organizations rely on the platform, which allows for messaging, video conferencing, and file sharing.
Outlook, which manages email and calendars, is a critical service for many users. Integrating the program with other Microsoft 365 services enables seamless communication and collaboration. Excel and Word, similarly, are essential tools for office work and data analysis.
According to Statista, the global market share of office suite technologies is split between Google's G Suite and Microsoft's Office 365, with G Suite controlling around 48 percent and Office 365 holding approximately 46 percent.
Although there are exceptions, this trend is consistent across most global regions. In the United States, for example, G Suite has a 59 percent market share, while Office 365 has a 40 percent market share. In China, however, Office 365 has a market share of 57.22 percent, while G Suite has a share of 42.74 percent. Microsoft is yet to release official data about the recent outages.
For the Mean Time
Even though the root cause of the outage is still being investigated, it is abundantly clear that the service disruption has caused significant mishaps for Microsoft customers.
The company has not yet presented a timetable for fixing the problems. Users who have been affected are advised to check the Microsoft support website and any social media channels for updates while this issue is being resolved.
