There are various reasons why your WiFi speed could be slow.

These include having an old router, a not-so-serviceable area, outdated devices, or accessing too many applications at the same time.

Some troubleshooting methods can help you solve these problems. But if not, there's a high chance that you are experiencing internet throttling.

Internet Throttling: What is It?

According to CNET's latest report, internet or bandwidth throttling is a legal activity done by internet service providers (ISPs).

Forbes explained that internet throttling is the act of limiting the total amount of bandwidth consumed by users.

This helps ISPs to lessen network congestion. On the other hand, other companies conduct internet throttling to force their consumers to pay more for higher bandwidth.

ISPs can only conduct internet throttling if they have access to the IP addresses of their consumers.

Identifying and Preventing It

It was mentioned that internet throttling relies on the IP addresses of users.

So, the best way to know if your WiFi service is experiencing it, the best thing to do is to use a VPN.

But, before you jump to conclusions, it is still suggested to do some troubleshooting. If they don't work, then here's what you must do:

  1. First, test your internet speed using free websites, such as M-Lab. Screenshot the result.
  2. Then, use a reliable VPN to check your internet speed once again; also, take a screenshot of the result.
  3. Compare the two internet speed results. If your WiFi speed is faster when VPN is turned on, then your ISP is conducting bandwidth throttling.

Now that you know how to identify internet throttling, here are some tips on how to prevent it:

  • Use VPNs from time to time.
  • Find an ISP that doesn't need to conduct internet throttling.
  • If all ISPs in your area are known to conduct internet throttling, the best thing you can do is negotiate.
