Bill Gates Believes AI is the Next Big Tech Shift, Rather than Metaverse

Although all three are revolutionary, he did not see quite as much potential for the two.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates stated that he believes artificial intelligence is the next big shift in tech for users and can be expected in the coming years. However, he does not see the same for Web3 and metaverse, as it was not much more revolutionary than AI.

SUN VALLEY, IDAHO - JULY 07: Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and Chair of the Gates Foundation, walks to a morning session during the Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference on July 07, 2022 in Sun Valley, Idaho. The world's most wealthy and powerful businesspeople from the media, finance, and technology will converge at the Sun Valley Resort this week for the exclusive conference.

Bill Gates' AI Predictions

Bill Gates revealed his stance regarding what will be the next big tech shift in the coming years. In a Reddit thread where he answered a question from a user, he stated that Artificial Intelligence is the big one among Web3 and Metaverse.

Although all three are revolutionary, he did not see quite as much potential for the two during the "Ask Me Anything" session about climate change, veganism, and Infinite Jest. He repeatedly said that AI is the most exciting field for technological innovation today.

He added that the rate of improvement for AIs is impressive and believes that this will have a huge impact in the future. Gates gave an example scenario in a Gates Foundation context in which he stated, "We want to have tutors that help kids learn math and stay interested. We want medical help for people in Africa who can't access a Doctor."

The former Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, President, and Chief Software Architect of Microsoft Corp. then revealed that he still works with the company in some areas, hence why he is still following these kinds of topics very closely.

Business Insider reported that he was also asked about his thoughts regarding the hugely popular ChatGPT platform. This has been making noise lately for its ability to generate human-like texts. He was also impressed with the rate of innovation.

Bill Gates Stance for Metaverse

In December 2021, Gates predicted that virtual meetings would move to the metaverse within two to three years.

Looking at it now, his predictions might be right. Especially since Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg appears to spend his earnings on investing in innovations for the digital universe where everybody can connect, work, and play.

Additionally, he was clear from the start regarding his dislike of cryptocurrencies and NFTs, as he sees it as "100% based on greater fool theory."

AI as the Next Big Tech Shift

By observing how AI works in people's everyday lives, one can really say that it has grown far beyond offering solutions. Interesting Engineering reported that an AI 'Robot Lawyer" was developed by a startup company for a defendant to contest his case.

As per the company behind the initiative DoNotPay, the AI will auto-respond from a smartphone through an earpiece of the defendant. This will successfully be able to defend the speeding case, which is expected to be heard in a United States court in February 2023.
