[LOOK] China Reveals Plans for Manned Moon Mission with Next-Generation Crewed Spacecraft and Lunar Lander

The CNSA and CASC are confident in sending astronauts to the moon.

China announced plans for its first manned mission to the moon, with the China National Space Administration (CNSA) releasing animations of a next-generation crewed spacecraft and lunar lander, Space.com reports.

The animations, which were shown during a lecture by Wu Yansheng, chairman of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), depict an astronaut planting a flag on the lunar surface and a rover in the foreground. The animations were broadcasted by China Central Television (CCTV) on December 20, 2022.

During the lecture, Yansheng discussed the progress made by China in the aerospace industry over the past ten years and the efforts being made to build a strong aerospace nation. He also talked about how important it is to have a lot of confidence to reach these goals and what astronauts need to do to get there.

CASC, the main contractor for China's space program, is known to be working on the various technologies needed for a crewed lunar landing, with some officials suggesting a short-term lunar mission could take place before 2030.

A Surprise Announcement

This announcement comes as a surprise to many, as China has traditionally been more reserved in its space ambitions compared to other major players like the United States and Russia. However, China has made significant progress in its space program in recent years, with the successful launch and operation of its Tiangong space station in low Earth orbit in 2022.

In addition to its crewed lunar mission, China is also developing its own moon project, known as the International Lunar Research Station. This project is seen as a response to NASA's Artemis program, which aims to establish a sustainable human presence on the moon by the end of the decade.

The International Lunar Research Station is expected to feature a number of scientific facilities and experiments, including a solar power station and a 3D printing facility.

While the prospect of a Chinese manned mission to the moon is exciting, there are still many technical and logistical challenges that need to be overcome. One major challenge is the development of a new-generation rocket capable of launching the crewed spacecraft and lunar lander.

The CNSA is currently working on this, but it is a complex and time-consuming process. In addition, the lunar lander will need to be designed and built, and the necessary life support systems and other technologies will need to be developed.

A Huge Leap for Chinese Space Exploration

Despite these challenges, the CNSA and CASC are reportedly confident that they can overcome them and achieve their goal of sending astronauts to the moon. If they are successful, it will be a major milestone for the Chinese space program and a major step forward in humanity's exploration of the cosmos.

It will also be a significant achievement for China on the global stage, as it will demonstrate its technological capabilities and determination to push the boundaries of space exploration.

As per Fortune, CNSA's space ambitions have put it in direct competition with the US. NASA has a rover on Mars and aims to send astronauts back to the moon this decade for the first time since the Apollo program ended in the 1970s.
