Tesla’s $350 1TB Solid-State Drive Listing Appears After Steam Support Arrives — Available This 2023?

Tesla touts that its SSD withstands shocks and vibrations.

Tesla lists 1TB Solid-State Drive (SSD) on its website shortly after the Steam gaming support arrives on the 2022 Model S and Model X electric vehicles (EVs).

The giant EV maker says that the drive stores your games and dashcam footage while withstanding vibrations and shocks on its cars.

However, the storage device will not be out this year. We have to wait until next year before we can get our hands on it.

As per the latest news story by Tom's Hardware, the carmaker recently dished out its much-awaited 2022 Holiday update. It brings tons of exciting stuff in time for the holidays, such as support for Steam and Apple Music.

The arrival of Steam is more notable as it brings thousands of console-level gaming titles on select Tesla EVs.

It is only available on the newer Tesla Model X and Model S as these EV interesting rock a Ryzen chip, along with a built-in graphics card. Not to mention that it comes with up to 16 GB of RAM.

But gaming on these EVs requires ample storage. Given that, the Elon Musk-owned automaker is soon selling its 1TB SSD, which Tom's Hardware says is "widely overpriced."

It has appeared on the Tesla Shop, but the storage device is going on sale next year. Here's what to expect from the SSD of the giant EV maker.

$350 SSD: What to Expect

The listing reveals that the 1 TB SSD of the EV maker retails for a hefty $350 price tag. The online shop also disclosed that it would be available starting next year or in February 2023, to be more exact.

The online listing of the SSD boasts that it stores your Tesla Arcade games and Dashcam footage.

Given that Steam support is now available, these gaming titles surely require huge storage. The rest of the free space can be used for storing videos that your dash cam captured.

According to a recent report by Tesla North, the SSD bundles with a USB-A female to USB-C male adapter cable. It should let users plug it into their vehicles, other devices, and PCs.

Apart from offering much-need storage, the automaker claims that the $350 SSD withstands extreme conditions on cars, including cabin temperature, as well as shocks and vibrations. Tesla says it is "automotive-grade."

But Tom's Hardware argues that other SSD from well-known brands also withstands extreme temperatures, shocks, and vibrations. For instance, the automotive-grade SSDs of Western Digital promises a shock resistance of 1,500g at 0.5. Yet, it is notably cheaper.
