Chinese spy drones are suspected to fly over Washington, with Senators expressing their concerns regarding the growing numbers of these technology flying over restricted airspaces. In the past several months, there have been multiple spottings of these Chinese drones which allegedly perform espionage in the country, particularly in the state.
The reports also center on the drones from the massive Chinese multinational company, DJI, whose recreational UAVs are available widely in the country.
Chinese Spy Drones in Washington: Senators are Worried
Washington saw a growth in Chinese drones flying over no-flying zones in Washington, and it is now the cause of alarm for US senators and counterintelligence agencies. According to Politico's report, American security agencies are now worrying that these are ways to conduct foreign espionage on the country, appearing as harmless drones.
The officials in the briefing claimed that they do not believe that this is the work of China against the United States.
SlashDot comments from the public claim that the US already deemed DJI products safe to use, yet centers on this Chinese technology as the main concern for these spy drones.
DJI's Geofencing Gets Hacked by Spies?
Politico's report stated that the DJI drones already have "geofencing" features in place, but the United States believe that these could easily get hacked to do their espionage bidding for their owners. It is connected to the reports regarding the DJI drones flying over no-go zones in the country's capital, one that is causing alarm to its security agencies and lawmakers.
Drone Regulation in the US
DJI is one of the most famous drone companies in the world, delivering the highly-reliable, affordable, and industry-leading unmanned aerial vehicles mostly intended for recreational use. The company's latest release is the Mavic 3, a classic take on the company's leading lineup, centering on a quadcopter lightweight vehicle.
Despite the prominence of the drone in terms of its advancements in videography and cinematography, it still faces massive regulation in the United States as it may bring potential risks and dangers.
However, flying technology is not only intended for recreational use, as time and time again, but it was also used for warfare and advancements in the military, with one example being Russia and Ukraine's conflict. There was a "Suicide Drone" used by Russia to trump over Ukraine, and it endangers the country's innocent citizens which the Eurasian state targets.
Many entities are already on the United States' watchlist for possible espionage operations by unknown states against them, with current suspicion of Chinese drones that are increasing their presence. And while it does not cause any harm now, its gathered intelligence may soon be used against the United States, with lawmakers and agencies seeing its alarming growth.
