A NASA official shared his prediction regarding the possibility of humans living on the moon.
Previously, the long-awaited Artemis 1 spaceflight was finally launched.
The international space agency said that this lunar mission is just the beginning. There are more reasons why NASA wants to explore Earth's only natural satellite.
Howard Hu, the Orion spacecraft project manager of Artemis I, claims that before the 2020s decade ends, humans will be living on the lunar body.
NASA Moon Prediction: When Could Humans Live Here?
According to CBS News' latest report, Hu believes that people will soon be able to inhabit Earth's natural satellite.
"Certainly in this decade, we're going to have people living [on the moon]," shared the NASA official.
He further stated that humans would have their habitats and rovers on the moon's surface.
Howard further stated that people would be on the moon not just to live but also for science.
As of press time, NASA is still preparing to launch its Artemis III spaceflight, the mission that will bring humans to the moon's surface for the first time since 1972.
Living on the Moon: Top Problems to Solve
Since the moon is not really considered a habitable place, scientists need to solve various problems before humans can dwell on its surface.
Unlike Earth, the gravity of the moon is quite weak. It is also unclear if the lunar heavenly body really has water.
These are just among the challenges that NASA and other space agencies need to overcome. HeroX provided the other major problems, such as the ones below:
- It is hard to get a reliable and renewable energy supply once you're on the moon's surface.
- The temperature, dust, and darkness of the moon will make it hard for energy storage systems to work.
- Moon's air could be deadly for humans.
- Moon's soil doesn't contain reactive nitrogen, an essential mineral for plants in order to grow.
Aside from moon explorations, NASA is also busy with other out-of-this-world activities.
Previously, NASA James Webb uncovered a distant star past the universe.
Recently, NASA astronauts conducted a spacewalk to power the ISS with new solar arrays.
