The new CEO of Twitter claimed that the people have spoken: former US President Donald Trump will be back again on Twitter.
Trump's Twitter account seemed to come back online after a narrow majority of votes were cast in Elon Musk's Twitter poll to bring the former president after a permanent ban from the social media platform following the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.
More than 15 million votes were cast on the online poll, with 51.8% in favor of Trump's restoration.
"The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated. Vox Populi, Vox Dei," the richest man in the world, said in a tweet on Sunday, Nov. 20.
No "Reason" to Go Back
According to The Guardian's report, Trump didn't seem all that eager to get back on Twitter. The former president was asked about it by a panel at the annual leadership gathering of the Republican Jewish Coalition, and he responded via video that he doesn't see any "reason" for going back at the app.
He declared that he would continue to use his brand-new platform Truth Social, an application created by his business, Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG).
Long before Musk took over the social media company, he had already expressed his plans to reinstate the former president and claimed that his permanent ban was a "mistake."
The billionaire noted that the ban led Trump to establish his Truth Social, which will be the same for other people on the "right" if they are banned from expressing their views on social media platforms.
Musk argued that this is "frankly worse" than having them interact in a single forum.
Following the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, Twitter imposed a permanent ban on Trump for supposedly violating their rules on incitement to violence. Trump also announced his bid to regain the presidency in 2014 and lauded Musk, saying that he had always liked him.
The Republican leader added that the app is also plagued by bots and false accounts - a concern that led to Musk's initial back out from the $44 billion acquisition deal.
Is Trump Welcome on Facebook?
Following the former president's statement that he will once again run for election, Meta confirmed on Wednesday, Nov.16, that the social media app has no plans to restore Trump's account.
Since the prohibition was put in place two years ago and will be reviewed in January 2023, there is still a chance that Trump might return to the site soon.
But if Trump decides to return to the platform and is given a chance, he will not be held to the same standard of fact-checking by Facebook - an aspect that has largely riddled his former presidency for spreading misinformation online and in interviews.
This is because Facebook's new guidelines state that remarks made by candidates or public figures will not be subject to fact-checking on the site.
