It may be the end of January, but the winter storm season is just starting. The Northeast is supposed to be hit with its first significant winter storm this weekend.
If you live in that part of the country, you've probably already cancelled your weekend plans so you can just avoid all the nastiness outside and stay indoors. You also know that this is nothing to be upset about, because it gives you an excuse to get reacquainted with your friend, good old Netflix Instant Streaming.
Just let these nine movies play, and you'll have the best snow day ever.
1. Snowpiercer (2013)
"Snow" is in the title of this one, so it was really a no-brainer to add it to this list. Beyond that, this action-packed post-apocalyptic thriller about the world's population confined to a train divided by classes and the uprising that ensues will leave you on the edge of your seat. And yes, the train does travel, or pierce, through a snowy landscape.
2. Forrest Gump (1994)
I don't care if you've seen Forrest Gump a million times already, you'll always find something new to appreciate in this Oscar-winning movie chronicling the titular character's life set against major events in our nation's history. Plus, if you somehow fall asleep, because that always happens when you're marathoning movies on lazy days, you'll be able to jump right back in without feeling confused about what's going on.
3. Amelie (2001)
This beloved French film is weird, whimsical and is ultimately about the wonders of love. Though it may be freezing outside, Amelie will warm your heart.
4. The Wolf Of Wall Street (2013)
Being cooped up in the house all day can become dull and make you feel a bit drowsy by the late afternoon. When you feel your eyelids getting heavy, that's when you should turn on The Wolf of Wall Street to wake you right up. This movie is filled with so much crazy, you won't be able to look away.
5. Fargo (1996)
Fargo may be a crime drama, but you can't help but have fun watching it. Frances McDormand's Oscar-winning performance as the clever and pregnant police chief Marge Gunderson is also brilliant. Oh, and there's lots and lots of snow in this movie, too.
6. Fantasia (1940) and Fantasia 2000 (2000) Double Feature
Disney's collections of animated shorts paired with some of the greatest music of all time will transport you to Olympus, a sorcerer's workshop and the deep sea. These films are classics on their own, but watching them one after the other will be something truly magical.
7. Virunga (2014)
This Netflix Original documentary was just nominated for Best Documentary Feature for the 87th Annual Academy Awards. Not only is its story of the fight to save Virunga National Park in eastern Congo an important one, but the cinematography in this film is also just so breath-taking, you'll feel like you're actually there.
8. Dumb and Dumber (1994)
Don't let the recent sequel Dumb and Dumber To deter you from watching this comedy gem. This is actually a really funny movie, guys. It also has a memorable snow scene involving a tongue getting stuck to a pole, so how can you go wrong with that?
9. Anastasia (1997)
I think we can all agree that Anastasia is the best Disney-like non-Disney animated movie ever. The story is intriguing, the music is wonderful and that snowy scene where the title character sings "Journey to the Past" is everything.
