This Hearing-Impaired Tech for Facial Speech Recognition is Extremely Useful—For Military Use Too?

It could be used as an alternative to radio, for the military's needs.

The Yonsei University School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in South Korea has developed an innovation that centers on delivering technology for assisting the hearing-impaired. This particular invention is focusing on reading facial expressions for speech recognition to accurately read the message that a person is enunciating for the conversation.

However, it has found another use now, and it is not only for medical impairments and needs but also a tool for military units and its communication when radios are unavailable.

Hearing-Impaired Tech Sees New Application for the Military

According to a report by Interesting Engineering, this South Korean innovation regarding a hearing-impaired facial speech recognition technology has further applications for more needs. It is a plus for the military, especially when radio communications see massive interference or background noise, one that impedes conveying the right message from one receiver to the other.

On several occasions, a military unit's communication devices go dark, and this is a term for when they are disconnected or cannot communicate with their base.

EuroNews shared that the Yonsei University researchers developed a device that uses facial recognition for speech, with many face sensors featuring its ability to transcribe words.

Hearing-Impaired Tech for Facial Speech Recognition

The team published their study in Nature's journal, centering on a speech recognition technology that aims to help hearing-impaired people to communicate more effectively. The device centers on many indicators from the face, which is a machine and system that will help transcribe, giving an accurate way to convey messages without needing to hear them.

Innovation Towards Facial and Speech Recognition

Facial recognition and speech recognition is in their separate fields, and each has its purpose for the needs of the modern technology era, where people mostly use them in their everyday lives. Facial recognition is massive, but it also centers on significant controversies with the likes of Clearview AI, a company that aims to collect biometric information and store them in its database.

At one point, Clearview AI extended its help to identify the dead in Ukraine, amidst its ongoing conflict which affected its citizens and those innocent from the dispute.

On the other hand, Google is centering on its speech recognition system to help those with difficulties to convey their message through speaking using the technology it is developing. The current project aims to deliver a system that will help people to communicate using Google's technology, developing a channel for users may utilize for communication.

The innovation from the South Korean researchers aims to bring both facial and speech recognition that will help people converse with their faces when speaking what they want to tell. Now, it sees a massive application for other than its intended feature, a device that the military may find useful for its communication needs when things go dark.
