China has displayed one of its most powerful radars in the market, and it centers on the SLC-18 active electronically scanned array radar which is capable of tracking and detecting enemy satellites. The radar is available to use for partner and "friendly countries" which would have stakes on the Chinese tech for its detection of low-Earth orbit satellite constellations.
The SLC-18 active electronically scanned array radar is now on display at the China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition in Zhuhai, part of the country's Guangdong region.
China's SLC-18 Radar is Capable to Detect Enemy Satellites
According to the South China Morning Post, there is a new radar from China that is powerful enough to detect and track multiple low-Earth orbit satellites in real-time. The technology was developed by a company called the China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC), a state-owned tech developer which now has the tech available.
The report claims that this new radar is available for use in its many partner countries, particularly those that are friendly.
The latest radar technology is a ground-based system that features "situational awareness capabilities" that it may use on the modern battlefield. Satellites passing by said region can be detected, tracked, and predicted for their next move, one that would give China's satellite tracking a plus.
Is this a Threat to the United States's Satellites?
According to Interesting Engineering, this new radar is a complex air defense system that can be placed in multiple locations, and China is not keeping this for itself. Ally countries will also get a chance to use it.
Space Force General David Thompson said that there are many threats against the US space systems already in place.
Satellites and Constellations in the LEO
The United States is one of the most famous in its space program, particularly with its reliance on satellites which agencies and companies in the country have been launching for a long time now. One of the famed satellite constellations orbiting the world is SpaceX's Starlink, one that is responsible for internet service globally.
It is known that Musk previously offered the company's internet satellite features to China, but the Asian superpower refused its service for use in its country.
There was also a previous contract with the US Air Force and Starlink which centers on a million-dollar agreement regarding future satellite systems to launch towards the low-Earth orbit. SpaceX will help complete the deal by the launch of this future tech, one that remains secret and unknown to the public.
It is known that the United States is thriving with its space ventures and program which relies heavily on orbiting satellites to bring information and service to the country. However, it seems like the latest Chinese SLC-18 is a massive counterpart to this, being a somewhat shield that would help the country and its partners to keep tabs on these orbiting spacecraft.
