Apple App Store Recent Data Shows How the Company Dropped a Large Number of Apps from Its Platform

According to an article by Tech Crunch, the App Store contributes a lot to Apple's overall income every year. Due to this, the company keeps track of all apps on its platform to ensure that quality is maintained.

Over the years, there have been massive changes regarding the different apps available on the App Store. However, recent data has shown that the recent quarter shows a massive drop in App Store apps.

Number of Apps on the App Store Dropped to a 7-Year Low in the Third Quarter of 2022

According to the story by Giz China, the data shows that the number of apps in the App Store has dropped to a 7-year low. During the third quarter of 2022, the total number of apps in the platform was 1,642,759, while its second quarter showed that the apps were at 2,184,456.

This means there was a massive 24.79% decrease in the number of apps on the platform. The data showed that 541,697 apps were dropped from the Apple App Store.

Google Still Dominates In Terms of Number of Apps at Over 3.5 Million

Amid the decrease in apps, the platform still ranks second regarding the number of apps on a platform. Google Play Store still takes the top place with a whopping 3,553,050 apps available, as per Statista.

Amazon Appstore is in third place with just 483,328 total apps, less than the number of apps that Apple lost during the third quarter. The article by Giz China tried to look for an explanation as to why there was a massive drop in apps.

Removal of Apps from the App Store is a Standard Annual Practice

The article noted that removing apps from the Apple App Store is a standard annual practice by the company. Usually, they do this practice every year to maintain that each app on their platform maintains its quality.

The large drops, however, are not normal and are not something that people can see Apple do regularly. This decision could be the company's choice to improve the overall experience for its users on the app marketplace.

Apple Notified All Developers in April About the New Changes to Its App Store

When it comes to user experience, Apple gave a notification to all developers in April about the chances that it will make it to the App Store. The company announced it would remove all old apps that no longer receive updates.

Developers were only given 30 days to make the new updates or face the risk of their apps being removed from the App Store. Apple is expected to keep removing unwanted apps from the official App Store.
