'Inside the Studio' Episode One: The Making of Catalyst
The first Inside the Studio episode gives players a look at the early stages of designing the defensive conjurer legend, Tressa Crystal Smith, AKA Catalyst.
The Respawn team goes into detail on the elements that inspired Catalyst, sharing that it all started when the game developers' had the idea of introducing a trans woman character on the legend squad. Lead writer Ashley Reed also revealed that Catalyst's kit was based on designer Samantha Kalman's pitch of making her a "techno-witch," which they found to be the identity that felt authentic for Catalyst.
Additionally, the team had worked with the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation organization and voice actress Meli Grant on developing Catalyst's compelling backstory. Respawn emphasized their vision to create authentic characters to let players feel a form of representation and be able to choose characters for their personal preference instead of the leading meta.
Respawn Highlighting Equality and Representation in Apex Legends
With the amount of effort and research it took to design new characters for Apex Legends, Respawn aims to highlight representation among its diverse roster of legends.
As seen with Catalyst, her design and identity were heavily influenced by her voice actress, Meli Grant, who is also a transwoman and practicing Witch herself, according to Gamespot. Respawn has also been taking the initiative to cast their past legends' voice actors with similar traits to the character as a way to be authentic and respectful towards the community.
"It's so much more impactful when you're telling open and honest and authentic stories where you have nuanced and three-dimensional characters." according to Catalyst voice actress Meli Grant.
This much is evident with Valkyrie's voice actress Erika Ishii, a queer Asian-American similar to her character, according to Cultured Vultures. Additionally, the Inside the Studio episode recalled that during the making of the Nigerian legend Seer, the writers had reached out to their Black Respawn employees multiple times for their creative input on his design and biography.
Apex Legends is available to play for free on platforms PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
