Tesla is Working On a New Process to Allow Salvaged Vehicles Back to Its Supercharger Network

Tesla owners with salvaged vehicles may finally be allowed to access the supercharger network soon, according to Electrek.

Recent Tesla documents show that a new process is being sorted out to inspect salvaged Tesla vehicles and provide them with access again to fast charging. The document is titled "Salvaged-Titled Vehicle Fast Charging Safety Inspection," which is a two-step process that involves the inspection of the high-voltage battery pack and all the components related to charging.

If the vehicle passes the inspections, fast charging will be allowed again. On the other hand, vehicles that don't pass the inspections will be offered repairs. Customers may also decline the repair if they don't want to.

Passed vehicles that have fast charging already enabled may still need to undergo a final charging test, and if it fails the test, further diagnosis or repair should be made. However, if fast charging has already been enabled, yet the customer declines further diagnosis or repair, fast charging will not be enabled.

The new process will be applied to all Tesla models.

A Big Issue in the Past Years

It can be recalled that it took years for Tesla to finally allow salvaged vehicles back into its supercharging network. In 2020, the company blocked access to Supercharging and third-party fast-charging to all of the salvaged vehicles, which was a blow to many people who have refurbished their salvaged Tesla cars.

According to Tesla, it was because of a safety issue, but back then, they didn't offer a way to inspect the vehicles. Then last year, the company started giving back Supercharger access to salvaged vehicles without any explanation but it was only a mistake because the company reverted its move a week later.

However, for a long time, Tesla didn't tell the public the right process to access the supercharger network. Now, however, it seems that the process has been made clear.

Why Now?

Why is Tesla giving salvaged Tesla owners their fast-charging access back? Well, it's because of the competition.

Tesla owners no longer have to fear that their vehicles will lose access to fast charging because of the increasing competition in the electric car industry. More electric vehicles are now entering the market, and more and more people are purchasing electric vehicles.

At the same time, more electric vehicles are entering Tesla's network, which means that it's easier and faster to charge. Meanwhile, Tesla's superchargers are still the fastest way to charge, and it's natural for Tesla to allow access again to all its superchargers.

In addition, the development of ultra-fast charging stations is also on the rise. In the future, it may be possible for electric vehicles to charge up to 400kW in a few minutes, which may also make it unnecessary for Tesla to block salvaged cars from accessing fast charging.

Tesla is now allowing access to the supercharger network to salvage Tesla owners, but they need to pass the fast-charging safety inspection. So far, it has not been stated when the new policy begins.
