Sony will eliminate plastic in its packaging by 2023, as reported by Nikkei Asia. The company will start will smaller products that weight one kilogram or less, which consists of their smartphones, cameras, and audio accessories.
The First
Sony will be the first major Japanese electronics company to move toward removing plastic in its packaging. However, when they will eliminate plastic from bigger products are still unknown, but it's definitely a part of the company's future plans.
To replace plastic materials, Sony will use paper boxes from external sources and develop new packaging materials in-house from sources like bamboo. As for bigger products, Sony will adopt new technology that will create a foam from powdered recycled paper.

Other Big Companies are Eliminating Plastic
Apple has already started reducing the amount of plastic from its packaging to four percent in 2021, and they plan to fully eliminate it by 2025.
HP has also switched from polystyrene to paper containers that they now use for their computers and other devices.
The Threat of Plastic to the Environment
Plastics can take up to 400 years to break down. That's why almost 50% of the total plastic has already been produced, but it's still in existence.
The threat of plastic to the environment is one of the most pressing environmental issues that we face in the 21st century. It has come to the point where plastic is causing so much harm to the environment that it's beginning to threaten our survival on planet Earth.
Every minute, an estimated 500 plastic bottles will be produced around the world. If no one stops this, we could be facing a global plastic crisis within the next few decades.
Plastic pollution has already reached the most remote parts of our planet and scientists have detected the toxic chemicals that make up plastic in the stomachs of animals living in the deepest parts of the oceans, thousands of miles away from civilization.
Now that Sony is adding its name to the elimination list, it seems that we're on the right track.
In an age where humanity is threatened by the destruction of the planet, we need to utilize every opportunity possible to make it a better place for the next generations. Hopefully, Sony's decision will be the first of many steps companies will take to help make a difference.
The world is becoming more aware of the damage that plastic does to the environment. Now, companies like Sony are becoming more inclined to reduce the amount of plastic materials that they use. Hopefully, others will start doing the same so we can eventually stop plastic pollution once and for all.
