New CO2-Absorbing Electric Car Arrives; Here's How ZEM Cleans the Atmosphere

ZEM is considered the world's first carbon-negative vehicle.

A new CO2-absorbing electric car has been introduced. For the past few years, Tesla and other automakers have been making drastic efforts to replace gas-based cars.

As of writing, the U.S. government is encouraging carmakers to focus on manufacturing zero-emission vehicles, especially electric cars.

So far, their models are efficient when it comes to avoiding carbon emissions. But no vehicle can actively clean CO2.

Thanks to the efforts of college students from the Netherlands, this situation may change.

New CO2-Absorbing Electric Car Arrives

According to CNET's latest report, the ZEM is a new electric car prototype built by Eindhoven University of Technology students.

They designed this new electric car to have the capability of cleaning Earth's atmosphere. That's why it is the world's first carbon-negative vehicle.

ZEM can do this thanks to its integrated pair of carbon capture devices located behind the vehicle's front grill.

Developers said that this new electric car prototype could use its carbon capture devices to absorb CO2 emissions as it drives on the road.

Lars Holster, one of the Eindhoven students working on the new electric car, said that their carbon filters are compatible with other cars.

"When these filters can be made modularly, they can be implemented into every type of vehicle, every type of transportation," he explained.

ZEM's Efficiency

Electrek reported that ZEM's two carbon filters can capture up to 2kg of carbon dioxide emissions.

But, it needs to travel 20,000 miles in order to capture the said amount of CO2.

If you will compare ZEM to a tree, its capability to clean the atmosphere is not that efficient.

However, ten units of this new EV can match the number of carbon emissions filtered by one tree.

Aside from having the capability to absorb carbon dioxide, its developers also ensure that most of its parts are eco-friendly.

For example, the carbon filters integrated into the electric car are 3D printed using recycled plastics.

As of press time, the team of Netherlands students is still trying to have a patent for their CO2 filters.

They are also planning to enhance the capacity of the carbon capture device's capacity in the coming years.

The arrival of ZEM shows that more experts and organizations are getting into the zero-carbon emission trend.

Previously, we reported that XPeng would start focusing on manufacturing futuristic two-ton eVTOL flying cars.

Aside from this, the world's first inflatable automated wing sail tech was installed on a merchant ship.
