Uber Users Complain About App Push Notification Ads: What's Annoying So Far?

The Uber app is currently experimenting with the inclusion of push notification ads on the platform. It's a feature that users wish to vanish yet the company showed it surprisingly without any reason.

According to Gizmodo's report earlier this week, several iPhone users are complaining about the ads appearing in their push notifications.

From some screenshots on Twitter, the advertisements feature a Peloton app as part of its promo on the Uber app. Although the push notification ad is one way for a company to promote its product or service, it won't be the same thing for the consumers.

So far, Uber might be evaluating to see if the ads are viable on the Uber app. For now, Uber riders are still not sure if they will continue to keep seeing push apps on their smartphones soon.

"This was a limited test and users can always manage their mobile notification settings under Privacy and then Notifications in the app," Uber spokesperson Noah Edwardsen answered in an email.

Uber has not yet fully disclosed the details about the push notification ads yet it already rolled out an early test to see how it goes.

The ads in push notifications arrive after Uber said that it will flash advertisements for Uber Eats. At that time, the ride-sharing firm has been testing the waters to see if the ads will affect the customers' preferences.

According to Uber's advertising division general manager Mark Grether, the company wants to promote brands and improve its connection to the consumers through ads.

Users so far did not like receiving unwanted ad notifications from the Uber app. In the long run, it will benefit the company but it won't mend ties with the customers.

If you find this annoying, Gizmodo says that you can disable the notifications in Settings. Just go to the Uber app and deactivate it once you see "Offers."

Apple Ads Are Also Questionable

In another report by 9to5Mac, Apple has also announced the arrival of ad slots in the App Store. Once the feature becomes available for iOS users, you will begin to see a myriad of dubious promo advertisements for games and apps.

Last week, an iPhone user criticized the Cupertino giant for displaying gambling ads on the App Store. After learning about the issue, Apple removed these suspicious apps from the platform.

Although the iPad maker has already paused the operations of these app ads, it does not mean that it will go away permanently. Of course, it's an ad and it will generate profit for the company so expect that it won't be gone entirely anytime soon.

There's nothing wrong with monetizing your attention through ads, but showing them without your consent is another story for both parties.
