Elon Musk's Twitter free speech approach might not work.
Before the billionaire acquired the social media platform, he already showed how committed he is to making it a free speech website.
Previously, the Tesla CEO made huge headlines after he completed his most-awaited Twitter takeover.
The social media purchase cost $44 billion, allowing him to have full control.
On Thursday, Oct. 27, he posted a very simple, but meaning full tweet to celebrate his billion-dollar acquisition.
"The bird is freed," said Elon via his official Twitter post, which generated more than two million likes, 50,000 quote tweets, and 340,000 retweets.
Elon Musk's Twitter Free Speech Approach May Not Work
According to Bloomberg's latest report, EU Commission's Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton already warned Musk regarding free speech approach for Twitter.
"I don't care what he's doing outside of Europe. You want to enter into Europe? These are our rules," said Breton.
Previously, the European Union passed DSA (Digital Services Act) as a law.
This new policy is expected to allow EU to easily police tech platforms, such as Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter.
AccessNow.Org explained that the Digital Services Act is created to establish new rules for private actors. These obligations are expected to create a secure and safe online environment for users of all ages.
Since this new law aims to make Twitter and other socmeds safer, this means that the EU's DSA can require these social media websites to remove harmful posts.
These include illegal content, terrorist propaganda, and unsafe toy advertisements.
What Will Happen if Twitter Breaks Rules?
The European Union explained that posts that are illegal differ between the EU's 27 countries.
But, if the platform is a big one, then it should be diligent when it comes to removing illegal posts.
In the case of Twitter, the platform should really be careful when it comes to harmful content.
If ever Twitter violates DSA, the social media company could face fines of up to 6% of its global annual turnover.
On the other hand, if the online platform repeatedly breaks DSA's policies, there's a chance it could be banned from operating in EU countries.
