Autocorrect is enabled by default on Apple devices, and though some users find it to be a nuisance, the great majority of iPhone users depend on this tool to correct even the most basic of typing mistakes.
It detects any misspellings and immediately makes the appropriate corrections for you. Sounds convenient, for sure, but it is not always perfect.
Words, names, and phrases that your iPhone does not recognize or know how to spell may be replaced with gibberish, giving your message a completely different meaning than you meant. It can get you in trouble, sometimes.
Therefore, this built-in autocorrect is not necessarily the function that can be relied upon most of the time.
If you are sick and weary of using this tool and falling prey to its errors, here are tips from iGeeksBlog and MUO blogs.
Disable Keyboard Auto-Correct
- Click the Settings button.
- Select General, then go to Keyboard.
- Toggle Auto-Correction off under the All Keyboards field.
Alternatively, you can do this:
- Click and hold the globe or emoji button from the popped-up keyboard.
- Tap the Keyboard Settings button.
- Turn off the Auto-Correct feature.
Your iPhone will no longer modify or fix any words automatically at this time.
If you change your mind, you may re-enable this option by following the procedures outlined above. You may use this method whenever you wish to either turn off or turn on the feature.
Disable Auto-Correct for Certain Words
- Open Settings and hit General.
- Click Keyboard. Tap the Text Replacement option that appears on the next screen.
- Tap the plus sign (+).
- Hit the Save button after entering the same word into both the Phrase and the Shortcut sections.
- When you input the first version of the text, this will prevent autocorrect from substituting another word for the one you intended.
Using this function, you may also set up text shortcuts for frequently used phrases or sentences.
Take Note of the Spell Checker
Turning off the Auto-Correct function means that the Check Spelling option will not automatically fix misspelled words in your texts.
On a lighter note, if the Spell Checker seems useful to you, you can turn it on even after disabling the Auto-Correction. If activated, it will still highlight potential typos in red. To do so:
- Go to Settings and tap Auto-Correction.
- Turn on the Check Spelling.
To use the function, just touch the highlighted term in the messages you are typing. The keyboard will provide suggestions to replace a particular word. Select a recommended term by tapping it on the list.
Normal Typing vs. Slide-to-Type
Starting with iOS 13, you may use the slide-to-type feature on the iPhone's built-in keyboard. Swiping your finger over the keyboard does this. Similar to Auto-Correct, it will change any profanity in a sentence to something more appropriate. To disable:
- Use the menu at Settings, go to General, then Keyboard.
- Turn off the feature by toggling Delete Slide-to-Type by Word.
