Apple Fitness+ has a significant revision starting Oct. 24, in which users will no longer need an Apple Watch to use the said app. Users in 21 countries where this service is available must update their devices to iOS 16.1 first. Apple's Newsroom, via 9to5Mac, confirmed the news Thursday, Oct. 20.
Based on the blog post, all 3,000 studio-style exercises and meditations conducted by a diverse and inclusive team of trainers will be available to iPhone users without an Apple Watch. Users will also be able to track their progress on their Move ring based on their projected calorie burn and the on-screen trainer coaching they get during interval timing.
As part of the update, Apple also introduced many new ways to get Fitness+ at no additional cost. First, buyers get a free three-month trial when they buy an iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV.
Fitness+ on iOS 16.1
Fitness+ will be a central page in the Fitness app, accessible to all users with iOS 16.1. This is where users will find coaching, rewards, activity sharing, and other ways to keep themselves motivated to complete their Move ring.
Users may sign up for Fitness+ on their iPhone and then use it on their iPad and Apple TV.
Next month, all AirPlay-enabled Roku devices will show visual stats for added encouragement, allowing Fitness+ users without Apple TV to broadcast exercises or meditations on compatible third-party devices.
New features and content, such as the Artist Spotlight series starring Taylor Swift, will also be made available for free via SilverSneakers, Target, UnitedHealthcare, and Mobile Health.
Taylor Swift on 'Artist Spotlight'
With the release of her new album Midnights on Oct. 21, Friday, Taylor Swift's music will be accessible on the service for the first time ever, starting on Oct. 24 with a special solo Artist Spotlight series showcasing new songs from her album. The series features fitness playlists devoted entirely to a single artist.
According to Apple, new Taylor Swift-themed workouts will be released across a variety of categories every Monday for the next three weeks.
The first three Midnights exercises will incorporate themed lighting, and Fitness+ instructors will showcase the featured musician in unique and engaging ways.
Additional Features and Content
Fitness+ Yoga expert Jessica Skye will lead a new training program called Yoga for Every Runner, which features one of the world's best ultramarathon racers and authors, Scott Jurek.
Time to Walk, a series hosted by Hannah Waddingham, will also premiere on Fitness+. Time to Walk is a motivational audio experience on iPhone and Apple Watch that aims to encourage users of Fitness+ to get out and walk more frequently by having them listen to interviews with some of the most interesting and influential people.
Curated material from the Fitness+ library will be introduced, as well, including Totally '80s Cycling, Best Mindful Cooldowns for Athletes, and 14-Day HIIT and Strength Challenge.
