This New European Political Party is Headed by an AI Chatbot

The Synthetic Party hopes to win a parliamentary seat in Denmark.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is pretty much everywhere at this point - from the fields of medicine, education, engineering, and the arts - AI is here to stay.

But what if someday we can have AI in the field of politics? Will AI robots earn a seat in our governments someday?

A new political party run by AI is currently making headlines, and they want to increase public awareness of the technology's effects on people's lives.

AI Chatbot Leader Lars

As reported first by Analytics Insight, the head of the party is an AI chatbot named Leader Lars. The group hopes to clinch a parliamentary representation to materialize its goals of raising awareness of AI's societal impacts.

It is worth noting that Leader Lars will not be on any ballots, but its human members are committed to putting its AI-derived platform into action. The objective, according to the party's founder, is to incorporate this into the established political structure.

According to Asker Staunaes, the party's founder and an artist-researcher at the nonprofit MindFuture, Leader Lars has received specialized training on the policies created by post-1970 Danish fringe parties.

He said that the party aims to speak for the roughly 20% of current Danish voters whose parties are not represented in parliament.

One of the AI chatbot's plans includes a "jointly-owned internet and IT sector in the government" and adopting a universal basic income.

"Artificial intelligence in the form of machine learning has already absorbed so much human input that we can claim that in one way, everybody participates in these models through the data that they have provided to the Internet," Staunaes said in a statement.

But since Leaders Lars is a machine, it is not allowed to run for office, and the human party members may be a stand-in for the chatbot. Staunaes noted that Leader Lars is only the party's public face.

The Synthetic Party

According to Motherboard, the Synthetic Party still needs to get 20,000 signatures, so they still have a long road ahead of them. Only 11 of the required 20,000 signatures have been gathered so far.

In order to address problems like poverty, inequality, and climate change, the party seeks to add a new Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) to the United Nations' list of targets that must be fulfilled by all nations by 2030.

The Synthetic Party's proposed SDG, "Life with Artificials," is focused on how to prepare people to live alongside machines and addresses how humans and AI interact. Governments may hold AI accountable for prejudices, other societal repercussions, and how AI affects human lives through this proposal.
