Smart Chips Feature

Embedding other apps into your documents is now possible as Google Docs introduce smart chips, based on a report by The Verge. Different third-party applications can now be used at the same time as Docs.

The "@" symbol is now more powerful as Google expands this feature with third-party smart chips. Users will now have the ability to tag and view information from several applications that partnered with the company by tagging and mentioning them using the @-mentions.

Developers of the third-party apps will start to work on integrating with Google's new feature this week since the company plans to roll it out by January 2023.

Third-Party Apps

Google listed on their Google Cloud the third-party applications that will be compatible once the feature has been released. These are AODocs, Asana, Atlassian, Figma, Tableau, Miro, and Zendesk.

"We're expanding smart chips to our ecosystem of partners, allowing our users to add even more rich data, more context, and critical information right into the flow of their work," Google stated.

The "@" symbol was also used to assign a meeting, link another document, tag another person, or add emojis as a part of the Smart Canvas launching last May 2021. By clicking only one symbol, it opens several capabilities for users such as interactive building blocks, templates, and checklists.

Google Meet Updates

Aside from Docs, Workspace will also include Google Meet to the update next year by allowing developers to access this application as they will have the basic meeting controls integrated into their apps, as per Android Central.

One example is when using Figma. Co-editing a Figma document within the Meet call is possible without having two windows on your laptop or computer. Chat and Spaces will be also added to the application, similar features to its competitors like Microsoft Teams and Slack.

Other Google Docs Updates

In addition to the interactive work-related abilities that users can utilize on Google Docs, the "@" feature also introduced a new way of including an emoji in users' documents. A dropdown menu of emojis will pop up with different options related to what did the user type after the symbol.

This feature was introduced in August of this year but only started to be fully accessible last month.
