There are many reasons why GPUs like the AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT seem to be dropping in price, with the most important one being scalpers might no longer be taking advantage of the GPU. When the GPUs first came out, they were extremely difficult to purchase because of their low supply and massive demand.
Since the supply for the GPU has improved, scalpers find it harder to buy out all stocks, thus making it more accessible to general buyers. With scalpers stopping their purchases of GPUs, gamers can finally step in and purchase the GPU for themselves.
Scalpers Used to Utilize Bots In Order to Hoard GPUs and Sell Them at Higher Prices Later On
Another reason why scalpers were able to do this was that sales of GPUs were mostly done online, with very few graphics cards being sold in stores. An article by The Verge shares how bots were used by scalpers to get both NVIDIA and AMD GPUs.
According to the story by Video Cardz, an AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT was spotted selling for below $700. The article noted that some of the prices for the GPUs were $1,000 more affordable compared to their prices back in January of this same year.

The most affordable AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT was spotted swelling for just $689.99 on Amazon for the XFX Radeon RX 6900 XT Speedster SWFT 319 version. The interesting thing about the listing is that it remains in stock as of press time.
In the past, when GPUs like the Radeon RX 6900 Xt or the NVIDIA RTX 3060, or other models are selling for affordable prices, they are usually bought out immediately. Whenever prices like the one for the recent listing were found online, they would almost immediately go out of stock when spotted.

The Low Price for the AMD GPU Comes at a Time that NVIDIA Is Launching the GeForce RTX 4090
The more affordable price for the AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT comes when NVIDIA is launching its next-generation GPUs, the GeForce RTX 4090 GPUs. When it comes to the battle between NVIDIA and AMD, with the latest GPU from NVIDIA, AMD will have to step up to compete.
So far, there is no graphics card from AMD to compete with the GeForce RTX 4090, directly but with lower prices for certain units like the AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT, budget buyers might still roll over to AMD.
As for preference, there is still a huge division between buyers that prefer NVIDIA or AMD. When it comes to price, however, the AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT being sold for less than $700 might be a step in the right direction for the company.
