A Raspberry Pi is a small computer capable of handling certain functions, but who would have thought it could be turned into a phone? The small, portable computer was turned into a phone with the help of 3D printing to create the case.
A Raspberry Pi was Turned Into a Smartphone with the Help of 3D Printing for the Case
The Raspberry Pi can be very helpful to hacksmiths trying to find an easy way to run a computer for simple or complex tasks. Although it has been widely used like this, it is hard to imagine the computer being used as a smartphone.
A new project that was able to turn the Raspberry Pi into a phone was spotted online, and it even comes with its casing. The casing was created with the help of a 3D printer, and though it looks a bit unsmooth, it was able to turn the computer into a smartphone.
Since the Project was Possible, it was Done to See How the Raspberry Pi Would do as a Smartphone
According to the story by Hackaday, although mobile phones might not seem like special devices, they can be complex small form-factor computers that come with a few other pieces of software and other hardware upgrades.
The article notes that as long as the software can be found, users will be able to use a computer as a phone. Since this was still in the realm of possibility, naturally, the Raspberry Pi was turned into a smartphone.
The Project is an Upgraded Version of a Previous Project
The phone's creator is known as asherdundas and was able to find an even older build before their project had started. The problem with the earlier build, however, was that it had not been able to receive any updates since it was first started.
The build brought some modern functions to an otherwise antiquated Pi phone, starting with its aesthetics. The new project used a 3D-printed case to hold the Raspberry Pi-turned phone to make things more aesthetic.
Raspberry Pi Phone Specs and Features
Other additional functions made up the phone, including a speaker, microphone, battery, and even the software used to make it a more modern version of the previous project. More details were noted on the official project page showing how the project went, what it looks like, and what it can do.
Of course, it wouldn't be a phone if users had to compromise when it comes to functions. The project Pi phone still allowed users to do basic functions one would often want to do with their phone.

What Users Can Do with the Raspberry Pi Phone
These included functions like calling, texting, and even taking pictures with a camera. There was also a small WiFi USB dongle to help users connect to the internet.
With the dongle included, users will be able to connect and browse through the internet. The difficult thing about the project is actually the installation of Android apps since it still runs on Linux.
