[WATCH] Chinese Drone Flies with an Armed Robot Dog - Is it For Military?

The drone robodog could be used for urban assault missions.

A Chinese drone was shown carrying an armed robot dog and setting it down on the ground in a one-minute video posted on the Chinese microblogging website Weibo, according to a report by The Warzone.

However, it is still unknown if the clip is from a Chinese military weapon test.

UAV Stretches Cable Across Dadu River For Bridge In Ya'an

Drone Carries a Robodog

In the footage, a drone carrying an armed robot dog is seen flying toward the rooftop of a building in a plain urban setting. The drone then flies away after dropping the robot on the roof.

The robodog then unfolds itself from its folded state and begins exploring its new surroundings while carrying what appears to be a Chinese QBB-97 light machine gun - which is a Type 95 LGM in the US-mounted on its back, according to Interesting Engineering.

The Kestrel Defense Blood-Wing Weibo account appears to be closely connected to the Chinese Kestrel Defense firm.

"War dogs descending from the sky, air assault, Red Wing Forward heavy-duty drones deliver combat robot dogs, which can be directly inserted into the weak link behind the enemy to launch a surprise attack or can be placed on the roof of the enemy to occupy the commanding heights to suppress firepower. And ground troops [can] conduct a three-dimensional pincer attack on the enemy in the building," the organization said in a statement.

This statement could imply that the drone-robot dog combination was created for use in urban assault missions. Due to the presence of large buildings and intricate architecture, these places are notably difficult to track and penetrate.

The Weibo account's other footage of various robot dogs demonstrates the pairings' employment in similar urban settings.

Shrouded in Mystery

However, it is difficult to determine the precise application of this technology because neither the robodog nor the drone's technical details are made clear in the video.

Hence, the actual employment of these technologies remains shrouded in mystery.

The name of the drone is also unknown, despite the fact that it resembles one of the several drones made by China. Interesting Engineering noted that the robot dog weapon appears to be similar to the Chinese QBB-97 light machine gun, which is a companion piece to the QBZ-95 assault rifle used by the Chinese People's Liberation Army.

The QBB-97 can unleash up to 650 rounds per minute, but the video has not mentioned how it will do that when mounted on a robot dog and how it will shoot-whether on land or top of the drone.
