Razer is planning to enter the handheld device space with the "Razer Edge 5G" device to rival other portable consoles like the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck. What really makes the Razer handheld device interesting is the added 5G feature.
Razer is Releasing a Razer Edge 5G Handheld Gaming Console Shortly After Logitech's Announcement
According to the story by Ars Technica, Razer Edge 5G will be an Android-based handheld console based on the Qualcomm reference design in 2021. The announcement by the company just after Logitech confirmed that it would be entering the scene as well.
In 2021, Logitech confirmed that it would be releasing an Android-based streaming-focused G CLOUD Gaming Handheld device. The exciting thing about the Razer Edge 5G is that it was announced alongside Verizon at the Mobile World Congress.
New Handheld Device is a Result of the Razer, Verizon, and Qualcomm Partnership
The Razer Edge 5G will be able to play games "downloaded to play locally, streamed from your console or accessed directly from the cloud." George Koroneos also tweeted out that Verizon, Razer, and Qualcomm are teaming up to bring what they described as the "first 5G mobile gaming handheld."
Device is an Upgrade from the 3G Mobile Antenna Enabled Sony PlayStation Vita
The handheld device will be equipped with the ability for users to stream or download games with the help of a 5G Ultra Wideband. This would be an upgrade from 10 years ago when Sony decided to integrate a 3G mobile antenna into the previous PlayStation Vita.
This allowed the device to serve as a cell phone replacement which was highly questionable during that time. This system version saw a massive drop in price just a few months after its launch.
Razer Edge 5G to be Based on the Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 Gaming Platform
Despite the innovative initiative, the 3G mobile version of the PlayStation Vita was then discontinued just a year after its launch. This suggested a lack of excitement when it came to mobile data options within a gaming console.
The upcoming Razer Edge 5G is going to be based on the Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 Gaming Platform by Qualcomm which was revealed as a reference design by the chipmaker. This announcement came alongside a dev kit that was designed by the company for the platform.

The dev kit came with a 6.65-inch OLED, 120 Hz screen that packed a built-in 1080p webcam as well as the "Snapdragon Sound" four-way speaker. Theoretically, the device would support "4K, 144 fps, 10-bit HDR color output via a DisplayPort USB-C connection to an external monitor."
At first blush, the Razer Edge 5G somehow seems to be a version of the Android-based dev kit that is more focused on customers. The design shown in the teaser shares similarities with the Razer's Kishi V2 smartphone controller.
