When one man from Ontario, Canada, started one of the most intriguing bring-me games on Reddit in 2016, the Internet acted quickly enough to provide an answer to another Internet mystery.
After days of searching for answers, an old photo of what appears to be an elf in the middle of a conversation that sent a group of Internet sleuths into a frenzy of archive diving remains a mystery.
The image of other VHS tapes on a bookshelf piqued people's interest, but it proved ineffective in providing solutions. When Tumblr users began compiling incorrect theories about where Sloan's photo came from, Sloan's photo became popular once again in 2019. Take a look at the effort people are making there, it is like a community of detectives.
Mystery Show Internet Hunt Comes to an End
In case you missed it, a cropped photo of an early version TV set featuring an elven figure that resembled a Smurf or a Santa elf became the subject of a massive Reddit search for answers in recent weeks after a Canadian movie podcast host named Will Sloan first posted an old family photo online in 2016. After years of searching, one VHS owner has solved the mystery.
If you have spent time on the TipOfMyTongue subreddit, the Internet's biggest game of bring-me and what-is-it-again, you probably heard of the mysterious elf man cartoon. He appears to be a typical Santa elf, dressed in white overalls, but he is quite old, most likely a senior North Pole elf. Sloan's image appears to show him shocked or desperately explaining something.
The Internet may always be bleak, chock-full of hatred, and full of dark energy, but people on the Internet can sometimes pull out a Christmas miracle - a particularly early one - in a show of community. The name of the mystery show is revealed after years of pitching ideas and scouring various VHS records and even Canadian bulletins.
Joshua Rastia, a YouTube user, was the one who finally figured out the mystery after receiving a tip from the show Blame It On Jorge, which recently covered it.
The Soulmates: The Gift of Light
It turns out that the picture is from The Soulmates: The Gift of Light, an animated TV movie that aired in 1991. Gizmodo reports that before the movie was made available on VHS, it appears that it was only ever shown on TV once during the 1990s and only in Canada. Additionally, the videocassette release was most likely limited to Canada only.
If you want, you can watch the video below. The mystery video turns out to be one of the popular Saturday morning cartoons and TV specials from the 1970s to the 1990s. The cartoon show has a captivating premise: the world and Santa himself no longer believe in the spirit of Christmas. The Soulmates, small galactic beings, combine hands with the forces of good on Earth to save Christmas.
The short cartoon show is fantastically made for a show from the 1990s. This is another short film to add to your Christmas Eve binge-watch list.
