The new EPA standards will provide buyers with incentives to switch, promote fewer emissions, and create manufacturing jobs by 2030. They have teamed up with the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) to develop seven recommendations for EPA standards for an all-electric future from the model year 2027 and beyond.

The EPA Standard Recommendation Principles

The EPA standard recommendations by GM and EDF are based on the following principles:

  • Protective, science-based emission reductions to reflect the availability of zero-emitting vehicle technology.
  • The standards must be proposed this year and adopted next year to provide stability and certainty for manufacturers beyond 2030.
  • The standards must be consistent with EPA's log-standing regulation of emissions from new motor vehicles.
  • Designed to enhance equity.
  • Incorporate an innovation opt-in compliance pathway for multipollutant reductions.
  • Complementary public and equitable investments.
  • Coordination to draw the expertise of different agencies and leading states.

When the EPA standards pass, it would also include an innovation opt-in compliance pathway that will reward manufacturers for boosting the deployment of EVs today.

GM and EDF said that the new recommendations must be proposed this fall for finalization in fall 2023.

EVs for the Future

GM has been moving towards the shift to electric vehicles (EVs) in the past few years. The clean car standards will have a major impact on the US transportation sector as a whole. The US is currently ranked as one of the worst performers in the world for greenhouse gas emissions per capita. The global warming and climate change are among the leading causes of the planet's temperature increasing.

The EPA standards proposal is one of the most significant steps taken to fight climate change and benefit future generations.

The new EPA standards will allow automakers to develop EVs that are more efficient, faster, and cleaner. It will also drive innovation to promote cleaner transportation.

As the world has embraced this technology, carmakers have been looking forward to the changes in the industry. Accordingly, General Motors has been striving to provide safer, cleaner, and more efficient options to promote their mission of a cleaner future.

General Motors and EDF have joined forces to push the new EPA standards that will change the way the world views transportation and help the environment. The proposed standards will drive innovation to provide cleaner and more efficient mobility solutions for today's generation and future generations.

More and more people are investing in electric vehicles nowadays due to the many benefits that they offer. In the future, it's expected that this trend will continue to grow.
