Netflix's Squid Game Wins Big at the Emmys
According to a recent report by CNET, the hit Netflix series, Squid Game, brought home additional accolades at the latest Primetime Emmy awards.
The latest awards for the South Korean drama at the Emmys mark multiple historical firsts in both directing and acting awards.
CNET notes that non-English content has yet to win an Emmy or even be nominated at the Primetime Emmy awards until Squid Game did so.
The South Korean thriller broke records in the streaming service, which interestingly made it an instant phenomenon in various parts of the world.
The giant streamer claims that in the first month of Squid Game, it has already garnered a cool 1.65 billion watch hours.
Squid Game Star Lee Jung-jae Wins Best Actor
And now, as per the latest news by Variety, Squid Game star, Lee Jung-jae, took home the bacon as he won the Emmy award for Best Actor. It makes the South Korean star the first-ever Asian actor to have been awarded in the non-English Drama category.
It is worth noting that Jung-jae is the fourth Asian star to have won an Emmy under the performance category. However, when it comes to the non-English lineup, he is the first ever to have brought an Emmy acting award.
The South Korean star outperformed other contenders in the category, including Apple TV's Severance lead Adam Scott, along with HBO Max's Successions stars, namely Jeremy Strong and Brian Cox.
Squid Game Director Emmy Award
Besides the acting win, the director of Squid Game also won a Primetime Emmy award.
CNET says in its report that no less than Hwang Dong-hyuk brought home the outstanding directing of a drama series award during the Primetime Emmy.
He won the directing award for the "Red Light, Green Light" episode of the Netflix hit thriller, which was one of its most intense scenes.
The game mechanics in the episode only allows players to move on the "Green Light" alert. On the other hand, everyone must stop moving once they are on "Red Light."
The two new additional recognitions of the phenomenal thriller now make it a total of four Emmy awards for Squid Game, along with various historical firsts for the giant streamer and non-English content.
