Telecommunications company Comcast is now gearing up to offer multi-gig symmetrical speeds over cable. The company had been testing the service for almost two years.
Comcast Features its 2Gbps Connection
According to Engadget, Comcast began a new deployment that will allow more than 50 million US households to access its latest 2Gbps service by 2025.
Comcast said that it would offer its multi-gig internet packages in 34 cities across the US before the end of 2022, with initial rollouts already underway in Augusta, Colorado Springs, Philadelphia, and Panama City Beach.
Even if you do not sign up for the new Gigabit 2x service, you will see an improvement in upload speeds. For example, in Colorado Springs, Comcast says some tiers offer upload speeds of up to 10 times faster than the previous speed.
The Gigabit 2x plan will initially limit customers to uploading files at around 200Mbps. But starting 2023, multi-gig symmetrical speeds will be possible, thanks to DOCSIS 4.0.
Comcast has been slowly transitioning to the standard for the past couple of years. Once the transition is complete, it will have the network in place to offer its customers up to 10Gbps download speeds and 6Gbps upload speeds on the same connection.
That would also allow it to provide symmetrical speeds across several cable packages. That is an area where the cable has lagged compared to the fiber optic internet.
Comcast's 2Gbps Internet Costs
Comcast customers expected that its Google Fiber internet will be expensive, and now the telecommunications company has revealed how much the 2Gbps will cost.
According to The Verge, the service will cost $300 a month. Gigabit Pro is what Comcast calls its fastest-ever consumer broadband tier, which offers twice the download and upload speeds of Google Fiber for only $230 more per month.
Just like Google's service, this service is not available to everyone. Comcast says you must live within a third of a mile of its fiber network in eligible cities to receive the service.
However, that is not where the cost end. The company's fine print for Gigabit Pro notes that customers must sign a two-year contract to receive the service, and early termination fees apply if you decide that the 2Gbps is overkill.
An installation window of two months can cost customers up to $1,000 even before they get the Gigabit Pro service.
Google also charges construction fees of around $300 for Fiber customers who opt for its basic internet tier, according to CNET.
But the fee is waived if you are on the 1Gbps internet plan or an internet and Fiber TV bundle. Gigabit Pro can't be bundled with other Comcast services yet.
On the plus side, the telecommunications company is offering its customers who agree to the two-year contract an early promotional rate of $159 per month. That makes the entire thing easier to sign up for.
Gigabit Pro is ideal for small businesses with colossal bandwidth needs, though the company also offers the service to those who need a fast service at home.
