Google has just outlined the steps that it will be taking in order to combat misinformation for the upcoming US midterm elections on both YouTube and the Google search engine. The company is highlighting different tools that it will be using in order to limit the spread of political misinformation.
Google Shares Which Sources It Deems Reliable
According to the story by Tech Crunch, when users will try to look for different election content on either Google or YouTube, recommendation systems will be used in order to highlight journalism or video content that comes from an authoritative national and local news source.
These sources will include The Wall Street Journal, Univision, and PBS NewsHour. When it comes to local news, the sources will include ABC, CBS, and also the affiliates of NBC.
YouTube Says It Already Removed a Number of Videos that Violated Its Policies
In a blog post, YouTube stated that they have already removed different videos regarding the midterm elections that have violated its policies. These include the videos that have released false claims when it comes to the 2020 elections.
The rules of YouTube also prohibit different inaccurate videos that include how to vote or even videos that incite violence and other content that could interfere with the process. The platform has also added strikes to YouTube channels that have violated the policies.
Strikes will Temporarily Suspend a Channels Ability to Post New Videos
The strikes will temporarily suspend some channels from being able to post new videos. Google will also be working towards making election coverage by local and regional news from different states easier to access for users.
The company will reportedly also be releasing a tool on Google Search that has been used before. The tool leads users to accurate information regarding voter registration or content about how to vote.
Google to Work with The Associated Press to Provide Authoritative Election Results
Google will also be working along with The Associated Press in order to provide authoritative election results within the search. YouTube will also provide voters with an information panel regarding voting along with a link directly towards the how-to-vote and how to register to vote features.
Election-related features on YouTube include reminders on registration and election resources. These include panel information beneath the videos as well as recommended authoritative videos that come with a "watch next" panel.

Links of Election Results Trackers will be Shared on Election Day
During Election Day, YouTube will share a link directly to the election results tracker on Google, which also highlights live streams of election night as well as includes election results under the videos.
The platform will also be releasing a tool that would help people search for different federal candidates' essential information. This will include information regarding what office they are running for or what political party they belong to.
