Now, an intense hail storm happened in Spain. This time, it killed a toddler living in the northeast Spanish town of La Bisbal d'Emporda.

The Catalonia town's mayor, Carme Vall, said that the 20-month-old baby was with her parents during the incident. After a ball of ice hit her, she was admitted to a hospital.

Unfortunately, the toddler died on Wednesday, Aug. 31, as reported by 9News.Com AU.

According to CBS News' latest report, Catalonia's weather office confirmed that the recent hail storm was the largest one they had ever experienced in the past 20 years.

Although the weather condition only lasted for 10 minutes, Vall said that happening terrorized the residents.

"The hail only fell for 10 minutes, but it was 10 minutes of terror. Only hailstones were falling, hardly any rain," said the town mayor.

This is why a place needs to have the proper gear to detect possible hail storms. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) explained that this weather phenomenon could be detected using radar.

The American scientific agency said that hails commonly generate return signals similar to the ones created by heavy rainfall.

Now, the National Weather Service's so-called dual-polarization radar tech is among the most efficient innovations that can differentiate rain, ice pellets, and hail stones.

What to Do During Hail Storm?

Following safety protocols during a hail storm is a must. Remember, this weather disturbance brings large balls of ice, which can kill anyone if they are directly hit.

Since you need to avoid getting hit by these dangerous hails, here are the things you need to do during a hail storm:

  • Look for a cover, such as trees, tables, cabinets, etc.
  • Avoid going outside your house.
  • Make sure you have blinds and close drapes so that you will be protected from broken glass and flying debris.
