A man from China shared his unfortunate experience with Shopee after the e-commerce giant canceled his employment offer when he arrived in Singapore to start a new life.
Shopee Cancels Offer
According to SCMP, a Chinese man named Lin Ge posted his plight on his WeChat account.
Lin Ge wrote that a recruitment officer from Shopee called him and said the company canceled his employment offer.
Unfortunately, he received the bad news while at the airport in Singapore with his wife and dog, as he had just arrived to start a new life in the country.
Lin Ge was not the only employee that received the cancelation news. The e-commerce giant admitted that it was forced to cancel some tech roles due to adjustments to hiring plans on some tech teams and several positions at the company are no longer available.
Shopee is just one of the several companies worldwide laying off employees or cutting back on hiring new people due to the slowing global economy and fears of a recession.
The e-commerce giant also said it would offer compensation to those affected by the sudden change in their hiring decision. Lin Ge, and others like him, will get one month's salary and travel expenses.

Other Shopee Layoffs
In June, the e-commerce giant also laid-off workers from its food delivery and payment teams. The company also reduced staff in Chile, Mexico, and Argentina.
Mashable also reported that Shopee conducted mass layoffs in Asia in June, with the e-commerce giant closing up shop in India, leaving 300 workers jobless.
The employees affected by the mass layoff received a notice via email.
Shopee also closed its operations in France back in March. The company also ceased the operations of its branch in Spain.
Despite ceasing the operations, Shopee will still deliver all orders as usual, and aftersales service and support will still be available to those who purchased on the website.
In Thailand, almost 50% of ShopeePay and ShopeeFood employees have been laid off, with workers being told to go home and check their emails.
Sea Limited, the organization that owns Shopee, reported losses in the second quarter of 2022 because of several market challenges.
According to Refinitiv, Sea Limited lost $931.2 million in Q2 2022, which is 42% higher than the estimated $655 million loss.
Global Economic Slowdown
According to CNBC, Sea Limited is just one of the tech giants cutting jobs. Many start-up firms in Southeast Asia have been reducing the number of their workers for months now.
Companies are now focused on profitability instead of expanding their business due to high-interest rates and economic uncertainty.
Jessica Huang Pouleur, from venture capital firm Openspace, told CNBC that in 2021, the cheap capital in the market flooded the market, which allowed companies to grow and expand easily. This has caused them to hire people rapidly.
Huang Pouleur said that more layoffs are coming in the next few months, especially in the tech space.
