Constipation is not only uncomfortable, but it can also affect your daily activities. People experience constipation due to the lack of fiber in the foods they eat, their lifestyle choices, their medications, or their medical conditions.
Although there are natural home remedies that you can try to ease constipation, like drinking water and adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet, it is sometimes not enough.
This is where TikTok's "Chia-Lemon Internal Shower" comes in.
How the Internal Shower Began on TikTok
According to Health.com, Dr. Daryl Gioffre, a board-certified chiropractor, shared the mixture on a recent episode of The Skinny Confidential Him & Her podcast to help listeners fight constipation.
Dr. Gioffre calls it a constipation reliever shot.
TikTok caught on and posted the unusual mixture that Dr. Gioffre shared. The said mixture can allegedly boost your digestion, serve as a detox drink, relieve constipation and serve as a hangover cure.
Called the "Chia-Lemon Internal Shower" challenge, the video trended on TikTok, garnering more than 147 million views. But does the mixture really beat constipation? And is it safe to drink?

TikTok's Chia-Lemon Internal Shower
According to The Conversation, to create the "Internal Shower" drink, mix two tablespoons of chia seeds in a glass of water, add lemon juice, and wait for 15 minutes before drinking it on an empty stomach.
Although gastroenterologists do not prescribe this drink, there is some validity to Dr. Gioffre's claim.
According to Reena Chokshi, an assistant professor of gastroenterology at Baylor College, chia seeds are rich in fiber and help you pass stool easily.
Fiber is a carbohydrate the body needs to digest the food you eat properly. Chia seeds are a type of fiber called soluble fiber, which attracts water and turns to gel. This helps the stool to pass smoothly.
You can get up to 10 grams of fiber for each one-ounce serving of chia seeds.
Internal Shower Claims
Since it has been proven that chia seeds contain fiber that makes releasing of stool easier, it is time to check if the other claims about the "Internal Shower" drink are true.
TikTok users claimed that the drink is a digestion booster, but according to NewsHub, chia seeds are not medically proven to boost your digestion. It can only help you release the clogged stool in your intestines, allowing your digestion to run better.
Many people also claim that the drink can prevent bloating, but there is no truth.
According to NIH, people with irritable bowel syndrome or IBS may suffer painful gas production if they drink the "Internal Shower" because their gut is hypersensitive, and lemon juice can trigger it.
As for being a hangover cure, there is no evidence that chia seeds or lemon juice can help make you feel better after having too much to drink. It also does not help cure hangover symptoms, like an upset stomach or headache.
