"Genshin Impact," one of the most popular gacha games, has recently run into ransomware exploit. The developer, HoYoverse, announced that they are still working on the case.
A Ransomware Exploit was Spotted on HoYoverse's Popular 'Genshin Impact' Game
According to the story by Games Radar, HoYoverse, the developer of "Genshin Impact" is aware of the ransomware exploit that was reported. The exploit was reportedly tied to the anti-cheat of the game.
HoYoverse stated that they are already working on a fix and that the new ransomware will co-opt the kernel-level anti-cheat software that is being used on Genshin Impact. The ransomware reportedly uses this in order to kill or even bypass protections and even antivirus processes in order for the ransomware to be mass deployed.
The Ransomware Coincides with HoYoverse's 'Genshin Impact 3.0'
Since the official "Genshin Impact 3.0" has already been released, it's not surprising that there could be a lot of programmers trying to go after the popular game. GamesRadar reportedly tried to reach out to HoYoverse for a comment regarding the exploit.
According to a PR representative from HoYoverse, they stated that they take information security very seriously and that they are already working on the case and will be able to find a solution soon.
In-Game Exploits Found in Regards to the Anti-Cheat Driver
The solution that they are working to find will help "safeguard players' safety and stop potential abuse of the anti-cheat function." The representative noted that they will be giving an update in the future should the issue be fixed.
Trend Micro was reportedly able to spot the exploit sometime earlier saying they investigated "mhyprot2.sys, a vulnerable anti-cheat driver for the popular role-playing game Genshin Impact." The report says that the driver is being abused by a ransomware actor in order to kill the antivirus processes and services.
Ransomware Takes Advantage of the Launch of Sumeru
It was also stated on Games Radar that organizations and security teams should be careful due to the ease of obtaining the driver involved. The exploit notably finds it easy to bypass the users' computer privileges and spread ransomware or malware like wildfire.
The popularity of "Genshin Impact" and the timing of its launch of Sumeru, make the game an ideal target for ransomware attackers. The new 3.0 of the game adds a much-awaited extension to the map which some fans felt like it could have used an expansion.

'Genshin Impact 3.0' Adds Sumeru and Characters Like Tinghnari and Collei
Although the map of the game previously only had Mondstadt, Liyue, Inazuma, and other sub-places like The Chasm and others with the addition of Sumeru, fans will have a whole new world to explore along with the addition of new characters.
"Genshin Impact 3.0" is exciting not just because of the extended map but also because of the addition of Tinghnari and Collei.
