Two-Storey Home in the UK Fit to be a Home in Mars

In Bristol, UK, stands the Martian House, a two-storey, solar-powered property that depicts how living on Mars will be like. The Martian House will open to the public next week, and there will be a series of talks and workshops about sustainable living, as reported by The Fast Company.

A key objective for Perseverance's mission on Mars is astrobiology, including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The Martian House

The house is designed to have people think less about colonizing space but instead live with little resources within a constrained environment. It was conceived by Ella Good and Nicki Kent, who drew inspiration from the planet Mars to focus on what humans need on Earth.

Pearce+ and Huge Broughton Architects designed the house, in which they consulted with space scientists regarding the climate condition on the red planet. Doing so allowed them to translate these insights into their design.

Aside from this, they also held workshops in Bristol where the public could dream up their ideal home space features in space. They found that the most common request was living plants.

They incorporated this into their design while the second floor of the house has an abundance of plants. There is also the hydroponic living room that is within a pressurized, double-skin inflatable structure lined with gold foil. It features a window and a skylight, while the gold coating is designed to reflect the sun and reduce heat gain on the surface.

The walls are filled with air, while the ground floor has compact bedroom pods and a Duravit toilet with a heater seat illuminated bow. The toilet also has an odor extraction mechanism because, in Mars, you can't just open the window as there is so little oxygen there.

The house is designed to withstand the harsh climate of the red planet. However, it isn't a NASA-proof house for the planet. The architects know that there are technical loopholes in the architecture as their only aim is to design and build a home that is closely possible to represent a house on Mars.

Mars Living

Living on Mars isn't just about building a better home but also about a new way of living. The architects are encouraging the public to imagine a life in which all resources are valued.

The people behind the project are intrigued to see how people react to the Martian House and the insights they will gain from it. They believe that people will change the way they look at living once they see the Martian house, and will be more mindful of their home's energy consumption, water use, and waste.
