Samsung is gearing up to release 4.0 SSDs that are reportedly capable of running up to 7,450MBps. Both its 1TB and 2TB versions are expected to launch in October, with the 4TB option to launch in 2023.
Samsung is Launching Its 990 Pro PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs
Samsung officially revealed the 990 Pro PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD, which is designed to be used for gaming, data analysis, 3D rendering, and even Ultra HD video editing. The 990 Pro is said to be capable of running up to 7,450 MBps and writing at speeds reaching 6,900MBps.
This pushes the limits of Samsung's next SSD models past the previous 980 Pro's limits, which were only capable of reaching 7,000MBps read, and 5,000MBps write speeds. The 990 Pro will also be improving the 980's random read/write performance by a significant 55%.
Prices for the Samsung 990 Pro to Start at $179
The improvements will help the newer Samsung 990 Pro reach an IOPS of 1,400/1,550K. Samsung is also planning to launch the newer storage models in October at MSRP, which places them closer to that of the 980 Pro.
According to the story by Tech Spot, the New Samsung 990 Pro 1TB model is expected to sell for $179, while its 2TB model with an included heatsink is expected to sell for $309. Buyers that aren't satisfied with these types of memory capacities can also opt for the 4TB version, which is expected to launch in 2023.
Tests Showed the Samsung 980 Pro Achieve Less than What was Noted
As per Tech Spot, the read/write speeds that are listed by Samsung were described as "likely aspirational." The publication did a test on the Samsung 980 Pro, and it resulted in a read speed of 6,300MBps compared to the advertised 7,000MBps.
No matter what the actual speed of the 990 Oro will be, Samsung expects the new SSDs to be able to drastically cut loading time for games. Should this happen, the performance difference would most likely be seen in games that would launch either in 2023 or later than that.

The Speeds Advertised Could be More Likely Applied in Games
As per the tests, the more recent PC games that were considered high-end show the same experience on either SATA or NVMe SS, even PS5 games can already run on SSD cards as long as they are able to pull in 3,200MBps.
Things, however, could change with the DirectStorage API by Microsoft and when it debuts on Windows in 2023 with the release of "Forspoken" by Luminous Productions. Samsung used the game as an example and demonstrated during the GDC 2022 the NVMe loading at just two to four seconds on a SATA SSD compared to the 21 seconds it took to load on an HDD.
With that, the users that might benefit the most from the added speed could be gamers.
