Older Macs previously had little to no hope of being usable, at least by modern standards. A new hack, however, has been able to upgrade older Macs with the macOS Ventura, which could potentially give the devices a new life.
Apple macOS Ventura is Expecting to Launch Soon with New Features
According to the story found on Apple Insider forums, the macOS Ventura is expected to arrive soon, which will give Apple Silicon Macs new features. The support for new features will be done while it also provides services to Macs that are still Intel-based.
Although there is a significant selection of different Mac models that aren't capable of upgrading the macOS Ventura, it was stated that there could be a way for the older Macs to be upgraded unofficially through a certain method.
OpenCore Legacy Patcher Project Lead Shares Recent Achievement for Older Mac Devices
Mykola Grymalyuk, an OpenCore Legacy Patcher project lead, posted a tweet that revealed that there could be hope for Macs that are of older make. After a significant period of time, the team behind the project has been able to get macOS Ventura running with the Macs through the "legacy Metal GPUs."
A certain number of screenshots have been posted by the developer showing a beta of the different operating systems running on a much older 2008 Mac Pro, a 2012 Mac mini, a 2014 Mac mini, and even a 2014 5K iMac.
macOS Ventura was Able to Run on the Legacy Metal GPUs
As per Mykola, after a long period of work, they have finally been able to run the macOS Ventura on the devices through the legacy Metal GPUs. For those that aren't that aware, OpenCore is a bootloader that is mostly used by a lot of enthusiasts.
It was also noted that the OpenCore bootloader is mainly used by enthusiasts in order to make their very own Hackintoshes which are basically PCs that are running on macOS. OpenCore Legacy Patcher reportedly follows the same logic but still applies it to allow "older and officially unsupported Macs" in order to run the newer macOS releases.
Alternative Method Helped User Run the macOS Catalina Operating System
Achieving the support for macOS Ventura on some of the older systems could be a good thing for different owners of legacy Apple hardware who still want to "continue using the newest version of the operating system."
Grymalyuk, however, gave a warning to the public that there is still no estimation as to when mainline support for the features that were demonstrated will be officially introduced to the OpenCore Legacy Patcher mainline version.
In the thread, another user noted that they are using the macOS Catalina through The Dos Dude 1 for their Mac Mini 2009. What makes this feat impressive is that the device is already 13 years old but is still capable of running a more recent version of the operating system.
