Apple Podcasts is Releasing New Updates that will Take Effect in 2023

Apple officially announced numerous technical changes that are expected to come to the Apple Podcasts back end. The changes are expected to roll out starting next year in 2023.

The changes even include an update in the Podcasts' approval process. The new update is expected to help decrease podcaster spam along with other useful features.

Podcasts Will No Longer Support the Owner Tag

According to the story by 9to5Mac, first of all, Apple announced that the Podcasts will no longer be capable of supporting the "owner tag", as well as its contact information inside the RSS feeds of the podcast.

This would result in podcasters no longer needing to put their email address in the feed details which could result in a significant cut down on issues of spam. As it stands, a lot of companies use the owner's email in the RSS metadata in order to try and reach out to podcasters in an unsolicited way.

Apple Podcasts Will be Requiriong a New Globally Unique Identifier Tag for the RSS Feed

It was noted that the owner tag along with contact information which includes email will no longer be recommended. Apple reportedly requires that creators have an active Apple ID for them to submit a show. Users will then be designated with an Admin role within the Apple Podcast Connect which will be contacted through the email associated with the help of Apple ID.

Creators will reportedly be able to add an email address for every show within the Apple Podcasts Connect. The Apple Podcasts will also be requiring a new GUID tag or globally unique identifier tag for the RSS feed.

Podcasts RSS Feed Crawler Will Start to Read and Accept ETag or Last Modified Date Headers

This is something that is defined by the hosting provider and should be unique for every single episode of the users' show. Apple announced that it will not be processing any other episode that would contain a duplicate GUID.

Tube different changes include the Conditional GET which will be recommended. The Apple Podcasts RSS feed crawler will reportedly be starting to read and accept ETag (HTTP 1.1) or the Last Modified Date (HTTP 1.0) headers.

Creators Will be Able to Use the URL to Generate Different Promotional Assets

By using the headers, Podcasts will be limiting the amount of data that their crawler will need in order to request should no changes have been found. In order to submit new shows, there are also certain updates that are included with the approval process.

Apple announced that when a creator submits a brand new show, that show will then immediately become available in the Apple Podcasts catalog.

Creators will then be able to use the URL for them to generate different promotional assets and start promoting a show.
