They submitted their complaint to London's Competition Appeal Tribunal. Led by Alex Neill, a consumer rights advocate, the lawsuit explained why Sony is responsible for the overpriced digital content on the online PlayStation Store.
"We believe Sony has abused its position and ripped off its customers," said Neill via News.com.au.
He added that since gaming is now the top entertainment industry in the United Kingdom, many people rely on video games to connect with communities and other people.
UK Accuses Sony PlayStation Store of Game Overpricing
According to Bloomberg's latest report, Sony is responsible for the alleged game overpricing on its official PlayStation Store since it imposes unfair conditions on title creators, as claimed by the U.K. complainants.
In their class-action lawsuit, they believe these unfair business practices force game developers to pass on excessive prices to consumers.
On the other hand, Alex said that Sony takes advantage of consumers as people push towards in-game purchases to entertain themselves.
The shift to video games allows the console manufacturer to abuse its power because audiences are becoming more reliant on its digital products.
He further explained that Sony knows its consumers are now hooked to its PlayStation games. Because of this, the tech firm's online video game store charges people with extravagant prices.
Sony Lawsuit's Other Details
As of writing, London's Competition Appeal Tribunal judges still need to approve the class-action lawsuit as an opt-out collection action before it can move forward.
Once it receives the go-signal from officials, complainants are expected to garner around $6 billion in damages.
Those who purchased digital games and other online content from the official Sony PlayStation Store since August 2016 are eligible for the compensations that the lawsuit can acquire from the gaming company.
