'Wave Energy:' This Floating Spine-Like Device Generates Sea Waves Into Electricity!

The search is for new ways to harness renewable resources to supply our rising energy needs. The key question, however, is why ocean and sea waves haven't been used in carbon emission reduction strategies yet.

But now, a firm from Cyprus has developed a novel floating gadget that resembles a spine and claims to be capable of capturing wave energy and turning it into electricity.

For more than ten years, Sea Wave Energy Limited (SWEL), a company based in Cyprus, has been developing technology to harness wave energy. Wave Energy Technology

As reported first by Interesting Engineering, the Cyprus-based Sea Wave Energy Limited (SWEL) has been developing its wave energy technology for more than ten years.

The Waveline Magnet prototype, which consists of numerous floating platforms connected to give it the impression of a floating spine, was shown by the business earlier this year.

The flexible and modular system is made to allow the energy generator to follow the motion of the waves smoothly. This gives the gadget control over how much energy is collected from the waves, according to the firm.

The device is also less expensive to produce since it uses plastic and reinforces plastics that do not need specific production lives. The device's production and deployment are also quick and entail low maintenance and repair expenses.

According to the company, a single wave energy converter has the potential to produce up to 100 MW of electricity under the correct circumstances. At the same time, it is already competitive with fossil fuels due to its cheap cost of energy production.

Most of the prototype's testing has taken place in restricted settings. The device's open-sea tests were only conducted in Larnaca Bay in Cyprus last year.

Not Harmful To The Environment

The company is convinced that the device's spine-like movement will enable it to move with the waves rather than against them, extending the device's life in terms of its capacity to survive at sea.

According to Interesting Engineering, the device will not be as harmful to the environment compared to wind turbines or solar panels because it may also be created from recyclable materials.

Reinforced plastic, which is also utilized in the device, will not only give discarded plastic a second chance at life but also open up a previously untapped renewable energy source.

If everything works out as planned, the company claims that the Waveline Magnet may very well be the most economical and effective wave energy generator in existence.
