This was made possible after the giant automaker was able to close a new partnership with the SCE (Southern California Edison).

For those unfamiliar with the Tesla VPP, it is a new tech that consists of distributed storage systems. This means that it works just like how Tesla Powerwalls function.

Thanks to the arrival of VPP, cities can now avoid using expensive and polluting peaker power plants. Tesla launched the Virtual Power Plant in California back in 2021.

"Participate in the Emergency Load Reduction Program (ELRP) pilot offered by Southern California Edison (SCE) and support the grid while also earning compensation and maintaining your energy security," said the giant automaker via its official press release.

Just like the Tesla VPP version in partnership with PG&E, the one in collaboration with SCE also pays $2 per kWh. However, its rules are quite different, such as the eligibility:

  • Interested participants need to have a residential service account in Southern California.
  • Have a valid Rule 21 interconnection agreement.
  • Interested Powerwall owners must receive electric services from SCE.

Tesla VPP's Offered Benefits

If you are a Powerwall owner living in Southern California and doubts about participating in the Virtual Power Plant program, you can check the benefits that VPP offers below:

  • You can team up with other Tesla Powerwall owners who want to help the world transition to sustainable energy and build the largest distributed battery across the globe.
  • Your extra Tesla Powerwall capacity can help prevent blackouts in your area.
  • You can earn compensation by providing your extra renewable energy to the Tesla VPP program.

In other news, the Tesla Giga Shanghai is expected to have faster export deliveries once the update is completed.
