Probably, there's a high chance that many owners will ask why the company wants them to return their two-wheeled vehicles even if the issue can be fixed with a software update.

If you own or are a fan of Tesla, then you will know that EV drivers also need to return their cars, even if the problem is solvable with a software fix.

NIU MQiGT EVO Electric Scooter US Recall to Happen

According to Electrek's latest report, the electric scooter model affected by the NIU U.S. recall is the 2022 MQiGT EVO model.

This e-scooter's firmware has an issue that causes it to lose power. Now, the problem is quite serious since it can endanger the lives of riders, especially when the firmware malfunctions while on the road.

Since there's already a software update for the firmware problem, Europe didn't require a recall for the 2022 MQiGT EVO.

However, it is quite different in the United States. Remember, U.S. law requires an official recall for both firmware and hardware problems of vehicles.

"In the US we are working with our US dealers to ensure that all updates are carried out through a product recall as required by US law," said an NIU spokesperson.

He added that they are really committed to making the EVO the next 125-equivalent scooters.

What Should MQiGT EVO Owners Do?

Genuine Scooter, the U.S. distribution partner of NIU, also announced the massive recall for MQiGT EVO electric scooters.

The company said it discovered, together with NIU Technology Co., the latest defect in their e-scooters. Genuine Scooter advised the owners to contact their dealer so that they can schedule a repair.

Those who can't wait for the fix ask for a full refund. On the other hand, if you are among the owners who are willing to wait, Genuine Scooter said that you will receive a $500 incentive.

However, if you have already transferred the two-wheeled vehicle to other owners, you need to contact Genuine Scooter via email (recall@geniunescooters.com) or fax (773) 443-1143.

Previously, experts revealed that e-scooter rentals didn't help reduce carbon emissions.

On the other hand, electric scooter maker Gogoro said that battery swapping stations would soon replace gas stations.
