Rejoice, fellow Gotham fans: everyone's favorite show not about Batman was just renewed for a second season, and with the latest airing of its most recent episode "What the Little Bird Told Him," it seems that Fox made the right decision.
Please note that the following contains spoilers. If you haven't seen "What the Little Bird Told Him," run away now.
With that being said, let's start with how things ended in that episode. Jim Gordon is a detective once more, saved from a life of handling crazy inmates at Arkham Asylum. Barbara has run off to her parents. Jim and Dr. Leslie Thompkins have fast forwarded their relationship to kissing in the men's locker room. And Bruce Wayne (and, unfortunately, Alfred) haven't been seen on screen in a while.
So now let's look forward. What can we expect next from Gotham? Here's what we know and what we predict will happen during the rest of season 1 and into season 2.
Edward Nygma will continue to riddle us with his presence on the series.
Although we don't expect Edward Nygma to become the iconic Batman character, The Riddler, overnight, he will still confuse and creep out pretty much everyone on the series as the guy who is obsessed with puzzles. We also expect to see some sort of fallout and emotional change in the character after his spurning by Kristen Kringle, who he overheard calling him "creepy."
"As more things happen to him, I think his joy will start to lessen and be redirected to the point where eventually all his joy comes from causing havoc," says Corey Michael Smith, the actor portraying Nygma. "There has to be joy that is lost in him finding this evil nature."
Fish will finally get her comeuppance but will, ultimately, survive.
Thanks to Oswald Cobblepot, Fish finally got caught with her hand in the proverbial cookie jar after Falcone discovered her plot with Liza. Interestingly enough, she might have gotten away with it, but she used Falcone's love for his mother against him, and well, we can't have that. Although villains rarely actually die on this series (save for poor Liza), we expect Fish gets tortured and somehow manages to escape: she is resourceful, after all. We also expect her to go after Cobblepot.
Maroni grows suspicious of Cobblepot.
Cobblepot accidentally slipped up in this most recent episode and mentioned Maroni's enemy, Falcone. Of course, Cobblepot basically said he was out of his mind when he mentioned Falcone, but Maroni isn't an idiot and we're guessing he'll be keeping a much closer eye on Cobblepot. Eventually, Cobblepot will get caught, and that may mean he inevitably goes underground as he transforms into his alter ego, the Penguin.
We'll eventually see Hugo Strange, but until then, we might be thrown more teasers.
Everyone was fairly certain that this latest villain, Jack Gruber, would become Hugo Strange, but so far, we've all been wrong. That means that Hugo is still out there, waiting for his grand entrance. We've been promised Strange, so now it's only a matter of time.
"Hugo Strange is going to pop up because we're going to start dealing with how Arkham was created and why Arkham was created in the way that it was so, yeah, absolutely," says Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller. "It's a Season One thing because in our telling of it the way Arkham was created and the why and how is one of the causes of the particular criminal climate in Gotham that allowed Batman to happen."
So who is it? And will the series throw more red herrings at us like Gruber?
Gotham airs Mondays on Fox.
