Thief Found Setting Up His Own eBay to Sell the Stolen Cards
His boss reportedly caught him by installing security cameras when he started getting suspicious of Christou's activities. The police reportedly found half a million Pokemon cards that were stashed away in his mother's house.
Some of them, however, came from his brother, who is reportedly a Pokemon YouTuber. What makes the story even more interesting is that instead of trying to hide the cards, the Londoner decided to simply list the stolen cards on his very own eBay account.
Christou Won't Go to Jail, but Will have to Fulfill 175 Hours of Unpaid Labor
Christou, however, was able to avoid jail as long as he is capable of paying back the full amount that he owned. So far, Christou will have to pay 6,000 pounds and reportedly fulfill unpaid labor worth 175 hours.
According to the Daily Star, Wood Green Crown Court was able to hear that Christou had set up an eBay account with the purpose of selling the cards from Magic Madhouse Limited over in Enfield. The owner of the business, Michael Duke, noticed that thousands of pounds worth of stock had gone missing just before Christmas in 2021.
How Christou was Caught Stealing the Pokemon Cards
In April of this year, he decided to install cameras over the location in order to try to catch the thief. When he looked at the footage, he was able to see Christou trying to open a box that "he had not been asked to go through" and was seen pocketing several Pokemon cards.
Police were then called and initially, Christou tried to deny the theft, but the cards were then found in his pocket. He then admitted to stealing from Mr. Duke on numerous other instances. The eBay account he set up was found to also match the cards that were reportedly missing from the warehouse.
Mr. Duke noted that one of the most valuable Pokemon cards that were stolen was one of 32, which was given directly to the top players of a "World Championship Pokemon game."
