Nintendo Switch Sales Plunge to 3.4 Milion Units in Latest Quarter — Chip Shortage to Blame?

Nintendo has clearly struggled in selling Switch consoles from April to June 2022, the latest earnings report of the company shows.

Although the sales for the recent quarter reached 111 million units, the Japanese console maker experienced a decline in its year-on-year record amid its battle with chip shortage.

According to a report by Engadget on Wednesday, Aug. 3, Nintendo saw a sharp decline in its year-on-year sales of Switch units during the Q1 2023 financial report.

From 4.45 million consoles sold in 2021, the sales plunged to 3.43 million units in the same period.

Nintendo said that the ongoing global chip shortage is one of the biggest factors affecting Switch sales. Many tech firms are still facing some difficulties in hoarding electronic components from chipmakers.

Since the demand for semiconductors remains high at the moment, some plants struggle to produce the needed supply for the customers and users worldwide.

"Hardware production was impacted by factors such as the global shortage of semiconductor components, resulting in a decrease of hardware shipments," the video game company said.
