According to HotHardware, Google is battling once again with another set of threat actors that are deemed harmful to every Android device. The apps have been carrying malware that might infect millions of smartphones worldwide.

As per Trend Micro security analysts, the malware campaign which goes with the name "DawDropper" has been delivering four banking trojan viruses which include Hydra, Ermac, Octo, and TeaBot.

The experts said that this case counts as a DaaS (dropper-as-a-service) attack because after someone downloads the app, the infection would eventually spread in the device.

What's even worse is that this malware does not only infect your Android device. They could also steal your confidential details stored on your smartphone, including your password and bank details.

In particular, hackers deploy TeaBot to rob away authentication codes from the users easily. It's also frequently utilized when keylogging to save the passwords easily.

The Octo malware specializing in screen recording is another threat to watch out for. In doing so, the remote attackers could hijack your pins and email addresses. It excels in granting instant permissions from your device, so there will be no problem regarding app restrictions.

17 Malicious Apps Need to be Deleted ASAP

The DawDropper incident is not new anymore to the eyes of the security experts. They have been addressing this problem since 2021. Although the malware cases were detected, Trend Micro said that the number of downloads involving the infected apps was not determined.

As per ZDNet, there are a total number of 17 apps that are deemed to be infected by the Android banking trojan. The analysts encouraged the users to remove them from the PlayStore right now.

As experts work their way out to eradicate the threat actors, the cybercriminals think of new strategies to dodge the detection system of Google.

"As more banking trojans are made available via DaaS, malicious actors will have an easier and more cost-effective way of distributing malware disguised as legitimate apps. We foresee that this trend will continue and more banking trojans will be distributed on digital distribution services in the future," Trend Micro added.

The following are the apps that you should immediately remove from your device:

  • Call Recorder
  • Rooster VPN
  • Super Cleaner
  • Document Scanner
  • Universal Saver Pro
  • Eagle Photo Editor
  • Lucky Cleaner
  • Call Recorder Pro+
  • Extra Cleaner
  • Crypto Utils

Before installing an app, it's always important to check their reviews to see if some people have complaints regarding the software or a game. Make sure to see the recent updates of the app on the Play Store before downloading it right away to your phone.

Additionally, you should also verify the developer behind the app. A trusted developer could be your only choice when choosing what program to download.
